As we mentioned last week, slavery is a difficult topic for our fundamentalist textbooks to dance around. Written as an antidote to perceived liberal bias in education, these books are certainly not going to dwell on the cruelties of slavery like America-hating liberals, but they don't go so far as to justify it, either. Whenever possible, they mostly address slavery as a divisive political issue that complicated westward expansion and led to the Civil War, while not going into too much detail about the actual conditions of being enslaved. These are two American history books that are untainted by that
Hmm... Don't a lot of BJ"U" grads wind up being "God wants me to be rich" types? Guess that whole "don't be greedy thing doesn't get much reinforcement.

the slavery system sacrificed the rights and responsibilities that God granted to the family

Somehow I can't imagine it's accidental that they avoid saying rights are granted individuals. Would make that whole CDD thing a lot harder to justify, or the attitude that children are possessions their parents have every right to manipulate into their own scheme. But most of all, women don't get rights in this formulation. Because a single mom isn't a real family.
...developed the patience to wait on the Lord. WTF? When it comes to reparations I say send the offspring of the slave owners back to Africa and I'll suggest Jim DeMint be the first one. On a slave ship, not sucking on a bourbon in first class air.
"The sin in this case was greed... their love for profit to outweigh their love for their fellow man."
Good to know that all these good christians support increased taxes for greedy billionaires and cutting funding for bombing their fellow man so that all Americans can get adequate healthcare.
Fun fact: The Seven Deadly Sins are not biblical. They were invented by early Christians to scare the piss out of other Christians and are not in the bibble.
This fact is mostly lost on fundamentalist Christians and some Catholics.
I have just put "Make sh!t up and start a religion" on my bucket list. Seems easy enough.
Can't really criticize slavery when the Bible, which is inerrant, accepts it.
And of course an inerrant text silences all attempts at deconstruction. Sorry, Jacques, Jean, Michel, Julia: you lose. Go back to Europe, you atheist commies.
In these songs, freedom often referred to the spiritual freedom of life with the Savior. Right. These people have never heard a black chorus sing "Didn't my Lord deliver Daniel?"
Frederick Douglass "I have often been utterly astonished, since I came to the north, to find persons who could speak of the singing, among slaves, as evidence of their contentment and happiness. It is impossible to conceive of a greater mistake. Slaves sing most when they are most unhappy."

Actually, she was a small desktop model with rounded sides....

Dude had a gift for saying a lot with a few words.

Seems like you could use this to argue against capitalism.
Indeed. Are the canines of Virginia and Georgia considered Southerners?

I might go for the bucket.
More like friendly fire.
Weren't American slaveholders post enlightenment?
