Yes, and: Let us not let the anti-abortion women off the hook. The non-coastal and/or Southern states are packed to the rafters with them. We probably wouldn't need to still have this conversation if it was only old men.

Even liberal friends of mine have sometimes expressed a sense that the women they know do not take abortion lightly, and feel that it can be a traumatic decision, and in some cases felt terrible about it afterward.

By sheer coincidence, all the liberal friends of mine who have expressed this sense are male.

Awesome, and new to me.

Just to make this more explicit, here is a modern translation of 5:21: "the priest is to put the woman under this curse of the oath--'may the LORD cause your people to curse and denounce you when he causes your thigh to waste away and your abdomen to swell.' "

"the priest is to put the woman under this curse--'may the LORD cause you to become a curse among your people when he makes your womb miscarry and your abdomen swell.' "

Priest-administered abortions: carrying out the will of the Lord.

Here is how the anti-choice folks get around this: "Only a couple of translations even translate בֶּ֖טֶן (be·ṭen) and בִּטְנֵ֖ךְ (biṭ·nêḵ) as womb. The rest use belly or abdomen."

Because "belly" has never been known ever to be a metonymy for "womb," right?

This made my day. :-)

Watch the wingnuts fight valiantly on for the 5%, just like they do for the 1%. Because that's what stupid douche funnels do.

Is anyone going to take a survey asking official full-term Mom-ladies if they regret having had children? I'm guessing probably more than 5% would answer yes, but sadly, their choice is irreversible.

Yeah, but what do they know, they're ladies. They clearly did not have enough information shoved into their lady brains to understand how much they actually do regret having an abortion. If only we could go back in time and force them to view transvaginal ultrasounds of the fetus-American that they had aborted. Then they would understand how much abortion makes them sad.

I recall reading somewhere that it was pretty common in translations from old Greek (not just the Bible) for "thigh" to mean sexybits.

I have first hand experience with this. I am so grateful that I am not in my 20's today. I got pregnant as a freshman in college due to a rape. I was a virgin until then. I got the abortion quickly with no trouble. The relief was overwhelming. Fuck anyone who thinks they know what is best for anyone but themselves in regards to this.

There's a study out there, somewhere, that came to the conclusion that some 60% of people, if they could do it over, would not have children.

As a penis having American I feel that abortion and its implications are best left to the women....I don't have a uterus (thank teh FSM) or boobs (unless I really let myself go) so I lack the necessary equipment to understand the mental calculus involved. That being said, I'd feel bad if I was left out of any input involving the choice to terminate the pregnancy of a woman I was intimate with because I think it shows a lack of trust but I also am not going to go around forbidding 'bortions or stamping my feet and throwing a fit because that's just a jagoff thing to do....and don't get me started on passing laws....
