Trickle down voodoo is bullshit. However, I'd much rather wealthy folks have buying habits that dump cash back into the working end of the economy than have them "investing" in commercial real estate or shit like that.
That, and my employees rely largely on the yacht industry for their over-market wages.
Yeah, the old saying that "a boat is a hole in the water you throw money into" is pretty accurate, and the recipients of that money are in many cases just the sort of small businesses that actually benefit the economy. That said, this particular boat owner still sounds like an asshole.
In counterpoint to the "look, rich guy was bad and bought a yacht" sentiment, I offer the following:
Yachts are one of the few direct pipelines for significant amounts of cash to flow directly to workers. Yachts need constant maintenance, and yacht owners tend to upgrade them a lot as well. None of this is cheap, and the vast majority of the companies involved in transferring cash from the wealthy are what would be considered small businesses, often with a dozen employees or fewer.
Not to say this guy isn't an ass, politically, just want to encourage wealth transfer.... We should be encouraging the wealthy to buy yachts!
When Lady MS was about 9, her step-grandpop briefly had a 40' cabin cruiser which was shortly thereafter forfeited to IRS for back taxes. Its prescient name was: Empty Pockets.

Yes, trickle down is working! Let's close down all the public schools and buy more yachts with the savings--jobs, jobs, jobs.

One of my favorite movies, and the one for which Bogart won his only Oscar.
They believe in wealth and power. Working in government gives them more of both. As for the actual governing? Fuck that!
