Just in case you weren't already kind of disgusted at the treatment of Debra Harrell, the North Augusta, South Carolina, mom who was arrested for negligently letting her daughter play at a playground while she went to work at McDonalds, there's also this: North Augusta TV station WJBF-TV posted to the interwebs a video of her police interrogation last Monday -- including the portion of the interview where she gave police her name, her address, and her Social Security number. But when we were home and my mother needed to go out for some reason, to run to the store for instance, neither she nor we had any problem with leaving me and my two younger siblings home alone.
As I have said before, when we were kids the neighbors would be ready to call the authorities if parents didn't give their children sufficient freedom to play outside and walk around in the neighborhood by the time they were 6 years old. What's the over/under on the number of people who misunderstand the First Amendment on this case?
...
I went to the park alone all the time when I was a kid but as everyone knows child molestation is a relatively new phenomenon.
