State universities in Texas are going to have a hard time attracting top academic talent, something they will have an increasing need for as current professors and research staff head for more tolerant states. Of course it may not be too severe since lots of students will be going elsewhere too and many fewer out of state students plan to attend schools in Texas. Florida will have the same problem, something that hit North Carolina about ten years ago with GOP assaults on teaching at all levels. In fact North Carolina reversed a decision to put a Pulitzer Prize winning journalist in an endowed seat with tenure less than two years ago. The teacher shortage in public schools continues to be a serious problem as high school grads look at how teachers have been treated and paid in NC and other states and decide that career no longer looks appealing. So fewer are enrolling as education majors as many teachers are reaching retirement status.

Should we not be surprised that Buckingham’s daughter went home and snitched to Mom about a perfectly reasonable lecture that she, as a supposedly grown-ass person and collage student, could have spent five minutes verifying or investigating? Texas is Fucked Up.

That was my first thought. What a freaking snowflake.

Dawn Buckingham’s daughter is what is known as an "informer". That is the most basic element of the political control of population in authoritarian regimes. When will she inform on her friends and family?

Snitch.

like anyone with a petty and spiteful three year old mentality she will tell on whoever will get her the most attention and praise - cos getting people in trouble is another way to virtue signal. Her fellow students (she is not their peer) and future colleagues should treat her with caution (if not outright shun her)

I wouldn't be surprised if she already has.

They’re not even hiding the fact that this is all because Patrick’s feelings were hurt. Trump really opened the door for republicans to be their worst selves.

We don’t know exactly what Alonzo said that wounded Patrick’s fragile ego.

doesn't matter if he wanted her gone. easy to pony up some bullshit, especially in Texas.

Texas and Florida have been sparring over the title of Worst US State ever since the Bush brothers were their governors. That arms race has only intensified

What would have happened if she criticized Biden? Or the Mayor of Houston?

I don't know about you, but I am extremely comfortable with the idea of a future doctor having a sad over being instructed about the societal realities of drug abuse. I hope the younger Ms. Buckingham grows up to have a wonderful career as far away from me as is humanly possible.

So, Texas Land Commissioner Dawn Buckingham’s daughter went to college to not learn stuff.

No wonder she chose Texas A&M.

We're soaking in it. The fascism, that is.

This is utterly ridiculous. Any academic worth their salt should leave Texas if possible.

As always, it's a Republican politician being a candy assed snowflake. The entitlement of the un-named royally connected student (named in other sources...) to complain about a public health advocate complaining about a public health issue being politicized is peak something. I'm so angry I can't even snark.

Public officials who ignore data that points to what actually saves lives in favor of their "lock em up" strong man fantasies, should realize they have blood on their hands. Instead, the person speaking truth to power is penalized. Democracy is just having such a shit time right now.

A recent report showed that Florida and Ohio experienced higher death rates of death from COVID among Republicans due to politicization of the issue. Those states may have their state legislative districts gerrymandered all to Hell and back, but you can't gerrymander statewide races, and that could be a problem if your politics are killing off your staunchest supporters.

I was SO FUCKING DISAPPOINTED in Gavin Newsom for recently spouting this bullshit.

He was against harm reduction locations in CA where clean needles, etc. would be provided (along with drug counselors) and claimed it would just "encourage" drug use, despite ALL of the fucking evidence to the contrary.

This stinking fucking Calvinistic country needs to pull its collective heads out of its collective ass.

Same reason the country turned away from the AIDS crisis: gay people + drug use. If straight white people had been more at risk, th8ngs would have moved a lot faster.

It's so damned gross. :(

Newsom vetoed a bill that would have allowed supervised injection sites in certain cities. The bill was controversial and its actual effect was uncertain. California already provides clean needles and drug counseling. Newsom is not Calvinistic; he's a progressive governor. Note that a bill with good intentions is not necessarily a good bill.

I agree, but was super disappointed in the quote I heard him say: This will encourage drug use. :(

And I didn't say Newsom was Calvinistic. The country has a horrible Calvinistic strain that I don't think we're going to get past very soon, if ever.

3 ... 2 ... 1 ... and she's gone to another university. Sad, really.

You also don't have to imagine what would happen if UC Berkeley hired a lawyer who said it would be legal for the to crush the testicles of the son of a person being interrogated by the U.S. government because John Yoo has been a law professor there for years now.
