Garvel is a self-described conservative who is “very careful” that her nine-year-old son and 13-year-old daughter never realize the outside world exists.

This may be literally true. I was raised very, very sheltered. Our church taught that we had to be protected from the "world." Anyway, I grew up and went to college and then to the Navy. It was a very big culture shock!
