Texas Dingbat Ted Cruz Will Explain At You That Harvard Law Is Full of Government-Overthrowing Communists
Have you met Ted Cruz yet? He is the new face of crazy for the Republican party, and boy does he have it all -- the smug countenance of Paul Ryan! The poise of Joe McCarthy ! And the batshit crazy of Rand Paul, or Ron Paul, whatever -- either way, he is THAT CRAZY!
Did you know, for example, that Harvard Law was stuffed with Commies back in the '90s, and that they wanted The Communists to overthrow the government?
From the New Yorker:
Two and a half years ago, Cruz gave a stem-winder of a speech at a Fourth of July weekend political rally in Austin, Texas, in which he accused the Harvard Law School of harboring a dozen Communists on its faculty when he studied there...Cruz greeted the audience jovially, but soon launched an impassioned attack on President Obama, whom he described as “the most radical” President “ever to occupy the Oval Office.” (I was covering the conference and kept the notes.)
He then went on to assert that Obama, who attended Harvard Law School four years ahead of him, “would have made a perfect president of Harvard Law School.” The reason, said Cruz, was that, “There were fewer declared Republicans in the faculty when we were there than Communists! There was one Republican. But there were twelve who would say they were Marxists who believed in the Communists overthrowing the United States government.”
Which Communists, incidentally? Oh you know, THE Communists, there is only one group of Communists, and they are also Marxists, and all of them want to overthrow the government or believe in The Communists overthrowing the government, and some of them were at Harvard Law in the 1990s.
Anyway, this speech was made a few years ago, perhaps Ted Cruz would like to rethink his position on the matter?
Ha ha, no, he would not, duh, because as we mentioned earlier, he is crazy and also, likes hamming for the cameras:
Cruz spokeswoman Catherine Frazier said the Texas Republican’s “substantive point” about Harvard Law School being home to Communists “was absolutely correct... “Senator Cruz’s substantive point was absolutely correct: in the mid-1990s, the Harvard Law School faculty included numerous self-described proponents of ‘critical legal studies’ — a school of thought explicitly derived from Marxism –- and they far outnumbered Republicans.”
Frazier defended Cruz’s original assertion, stating: “As two professors explained in the Stanford Law Review in 1984: ‘A large segment of the [critical legal studies] membership forms part of the revisionist wing of Marxism. These members remain faithful to the central premises of Marx’s thought, especially to the view that the material conditions of life are the engine of social history. Their course is defined by the magnetic pull of Marxism.’”
Your Wonkette has taken classes in critical legal studies, and we are SO SAD we missed the lecture on overthrowing the government, that would have been a real highlight, because most of critical legal studies isn't as interesting as a potential Communist Revolution.
And do we have to explain that critical legal studies theorists are not necessarily Marxists, but rather, may be theorists drawing from Marxism (as well as Foucault, Gramsci, Derrida, and others) to engage in intersectional analyses on economic power, law, jurisprudential epistemology, and the relationships between all three? Should we also point out that there were at least FOUR Republicans on the Harvard Law School faculty when Cruz was there, including one who served as Reagan's solicitor general ?
We should explain these things, but we won't bother, because Ted Cruz is either a) crazy, b) incapable of critical thinking, c) does not read Wonkette, or d) all of the above. We will, however, note that he and Michele Bachmann just might be perfect for each other, and that apparently we are all supposed to start worrying about Communists now, and that we are so happy to learn that this man is on unimportant committees like, oh, Science, and Armed Services.
