I cannot do anything else but refer to the words of someone who was much smarter and funnier than I will ever be, Ms. Molly Ivins:"I would denounce some sorry son of a bitch in the [Texas] ledge(ph) as an egg-sucking child molester who runs on all fours and has the brains of an adolescent piss ant. And the next day, that sumbitch would spread out his arms and say: Baby, you put my name in your paper."

Yeah, in the beginning, the Average Yearly Progress (AYP) criteria were based on test scores and magically, the kids with the worst grades would just not show up to school on test day! Imagine that. So much cheating has occurred from these programs that tie school and teacher evaluations on test scores. Here in Georgia, the Atlanta Public Schools had one of the worst scandals. What isn't mentioned in the attached story is how many teachers were harassed and /or fired for not participating in the cheating, which is why the charges were racketeering. Many of the teachers cheated in order to win awards and bonuses. The worst consequence are the kids who were robbed of a true education. There was compensation for them in extra tutoring and other help. https://en.wikipedia.org/wi...

At lot of states are split as well. I live in the Blue State part of Georgia and since 2012, I have been spending time at the Legislature to try to keep the Red State reps from their usual banannagins. We are keeping the state more and more purple over all, but it is difficult because gerrymandering. The Blue Islands (Atlanta, Athens, Savannah and Albany) have most of the population and without these areas, we would be more like our neighboring states. It helps that the Tea Party is reined in here by the Establishment GOP who like the corporate dollars and don't want to effect the monies, a lot of which get funneled to them and their homies.

My kid would always comment on how much time I would spend at the school, but I learned from my mother that there are benefits to being visible. She went to Catholic school until 3rd grade and then a small private school until 8th grade. For 8-12, she went to one of the best public schools in the state. Even when your kid doesn't need special help, it doesn't hurt to make sure that the admin and teachers know you are watching. My daughter could have gone to accelerated programs and taken AP/college courses, but she wasn't wired that way, being more creative. By senior year, some of the parents of some of her friends were complaining that the school did not do enough for their kids. But many of them really weren't paying attention to what the school did offer and make sure that their kids were in the right classes. For example, the high school has vocational/technical classes on campus and encouraged all of the kids to take classes there. My daughter took CAD/CAM at all levels and the instructor had them doing the architectural drawings for the extension built on the feeder middle school, in coordination with the designers and construction firm. She also took graphic design courses and was on the editorial staff of the school magazine, which has been nationally recognized since the 1950's. Going to the national conference in Philadelphia her senior year and competing for awards was a highlight for her.

Not really tax savings when the kids are unprepared for the work force. Which the rich don't always recognize. You get what you pay for. My BF who self identifies as Libertarian and I have these discussions all the time. Like when we go to restaurants and the service is bad, and he'll complain that "these people think they deserve $15/hr". And I explain no, not these people. The people that deserve $15/hour won't take these jobs that pay only minimum. It's like Chris Rock says - if you are only making minimum wage, that means your boss would pay you less if he could!

My uncle married a younger woman from Russia who is very educated and motivated. They had a son together and she was teaching the son Russian at home. My stupid uncle would get upset when they would speak Russian and he couldn't understand them. I was like, dood, can't you learn faster than a toddler. Shit, have her teach you too.

Then you have George Washington Carver, founder of Tuskegee Institute (now Tuskegee University) in Alabama who famously said, "you can't keep the black man in the ditch without crawling in with him".Funny story about Tuskegee. They changed the name when the Alabama lege tried to deny state funding with a rules change that designated funds for universities only. Yep, they are that petty.

GA also too. I pay more in property taxes in my town than I would if I lived in the county, because my town has it's own school system. In Georgia, there are only three cities that have their own school systems (Marietta, Rome and Decatur). I live in Decatur. The county school system is so bad that the state had to step in to deal with the corruption.Even though my daughter has graduated school, I gladly pay the extra taxes because of quality of life. My property values stayed above water during the Great Recession. My city gives tax breaks to the seniors on a graduated scale to allow people to stay in their homes. Above age 80, your taxes can be forgiven to be paid as part of your estate, if you desire.
