I just read about this also too! Race relations have always been very different in Louisiana, more because we've been under a rollercoaster of different colonial rulers since 1699. Interestingly, the slave revolt happened after the French took over (for the third or fourth time) and the French didn't like the idea of slaves having almost as many rights as the whites or Creoles. The Spanish, who swapped governing duties in Louisiana with the French several times, were the ones who started manumitting slaves left and right which, to the French and other OG Louisianians, were afraid would give unfree slaves ideas above their station (including, shockingly, that they could be FREED). Hence, conflict.

One slight correction: the German Coast is west of New Orleans, and there's a town called Des Allemands (the Germans) over in either Lafourche or Terrebonne Parish. The Germans are also the ones who perfected sausage-making (mind out of the gutters, you people!) and, to this day, the city of LaPlace (in St. John the Baptist Parish) still has an annual Andouille Festival and also sells the best andouille in the state.
