There's always been pushback against growers using immigrants to break unions. Same goes in Southern California: Cesar Chavez (having his own legacy "issues" right now) was against Mexican illegal immigration for the same reason. It's a complicated issue. but yeah it's also really racist.
I haven't read any other texts on the war, but if you are planning a deep dive on the "Philippine-American War", I recommend Jim Zwick's "Mark Twain's Weapons of Satire; Anti-Imperialist Writings on the Philippine-American War", Syracuse University Press 1992, as the best text on that war, and I look forward to it!
