Why is the right so worried that another human being will get a mouthful of food or a bandaid? In the 1970s, I worked for social services. People were given assistance in the way of food stamps, Medicare and a small amount of cash and in some cases subsidized housing with the idea that it would keep them and their kids alive and healthy until they could find a job. Then there was a push to put people to work and get them off welfare faster. In order to keep their benefits, they had to be actively seeking work. Just gave birth? No childcare? No transportation? No matter - get to work. Then the most meager paycheck from McDonald's stopped cash payment, food stamps maybe - but definitely Medicare stopped after a person had been slinging burgers or whatever for 4 months. Why take away health care after 4 months? Nobody really knew. So many mothers and caretaker grandmothers had to give up their jobs so that their kids could have health care. A chronically ill child meant special (unaffordable) daycare and expensive doctors and medicines. As I said goodbye to a person with a new job, I'd mark my calendar four months ahead because that's when she'd be back to reapply for help. An insane system.
Because I don't want to get lovingly corrected again (it was deserved), I propose stripping every member of PAB's administration of all their benefits, seize all their assets, and send them on permanent vacations to Haiti (which is safe, according to them).
OT: I just had to peel Michael, my neighbor across the hall, off the floor again.
I came upstairs with a load of groceries, and there he was, face down on the floor, half in and half out of his unit. He was in the company of a woman I'd seen him with before. She was Black and looked to be well into her sixties. I'd met her briefly, and she'd seemed the sober, rational type -- exactly what Michael needs, IOW.
Except she stood there with a helpless look on her face. She was in no wise strong enough to pick him off the floor by herself.
So I pitched in, because that's what good neighbors do if they're lucky enough to be sober themselves. He crawled toward an armchair, making glacial progress, until the lady and I got him vertical enough to get his butt onto the seat and slide it securely backward.
I told him, "Michael, you really need to slow down on the drinking."
"Never."
"That's not the right answer."
"It's the only one I got."
Finally I just muttered, "You're a grown man, handle your business" and turned to leave. His friend said, "Thank you. I don't know what I would have done if you hadn't come along."
He's really deteriorating. He lost his job a couple of months ago, his son hasn't visited him in nearly a year, and when I see him outside, he can barely walk, even when he hasn't been drinking. It's getting to the point where I'm worried if I don't see or hear him for a few days in a row.
So just big ghey me in Chicago watching Illinois / Ohio State football game - and a few minutes ago some TRUMP ad of him walking down a hallway (Whitehouse) in black and white - with subscript of "PAID BY US GOVERNMENT". Total bullshit. Totally partisan. I text my Dad in Arizona who is watching the same game - got the same ad (and 86 year old Dad hates Trump with a perfect hatred). dafuq?
I was on a Marketplace plan for six years as a self employed business owner-my income fluctuated by almost 100% during those years based on receipts and that overhead thing (rent, staff, insurance including employee health insurance, equipment, software, utilities etc.)
So I was ALWAYS guessing how much I'd make in December/January (and I usually guessed optimistically so I got less premium credit than I was entitled to).
None of these ignorant cabinet millionaires ever had to run an actual business or worry about health insurance.
My 3 year grant-funded contract at my PT job ends around 12/20/26 and I have no idea at the moment WTF I'm gonna' do after that. (I'd love to stay and they'd love to keep me, but there's probably no funding.)
For now, I'm probably just gonna' estimate a similar pay for next year in hopes that it'll keep my subsidy the same and my monthly payment in the same $100 range.
