Today in the hed, we appreciate a Rembrandt masterpiece, lovingly ruined by gif’ifying. But at least I wasn’t the guy who cut and apparently discarded whole strips off the edges of the canvass! 😱

No, no, no, thank YOU! I've always liked that painting but now I like it for another reason!

Hey, sometimes you've got to trim a bit on the sides so that it'll fit on the wall. Nobody will miss those bits. Look at the Mona Lisa, you don't miss the bits they trimmed off the edges, do you?

Sorry. I tried to slow things down a bit, I guess I need to slow further? It's often hard to gauge how fast things are going to work on different devices.

Also shouldn't that be "wasn't" up there.

Being a typo machine myself, I cannot complaining.

"But [TFG] is still a long way off from achieving total control over U.S. institutions, media and the judiciary, or building the kind of SOCIAL CONSENSUS HE"D NEED to reign as an autocrat."

There's a thing about dictatorship that they don't seem to understand over at Politico.

Damn, the O-house bats made Wonkette? I didn't stay in Oglethorpe when I went to UGA. I was in Creswell (aka CresHELL, get it? haha! Oh, freshmen dorms.) We had rats in Creswell instead.

But I took at least one class in the basement of O-house, and it had a dining hall in it that served Sunday brunch, where they hired a senior piano major to come serenade the students for a few hours as a sweet student worker gig. The road right by it is known as Jesus Junction because it had two churches on the corner. (One has since been replaced with apartments.)

The other extremely famous bat infestation on UGA campus is in the creek tunnel underneath the football stadium. That species is endangered, to boot.

I saw Manu Raju in person this morning outside the Capitol Hill Club. Many reporters were around a number of members of Congress - but no one I immediately recognized. Plus I am short so I couldn’t actually tell who was being interviewed. Also I had coffee at the Supreme Court ( they have a small cafe)- I have only been at the Court before to protest outside. I went to the Library of Congress to look at their exhibits - they don’t have a public cafe and the Court is next door. I went through security at both places because I am an actual tourist.

While sad to see you go, I'm happy that you're embarking on a new adventure! I enjoy reading your analysis and commentary on the arts, and have been living vicariously through you as a former resident of the PNW. Giving your Substack and podcast a follow!

"Noah Berlatsky argues that we should stop equating Trump’s obvious evil with mental health."

Trump has been evil since he was an adolescent (at least). That has nothing to do with the obvious fact that his brain is deteriorating.

Paramount+ is the one streamer out of the gazillion out there that has more self-identified conservative viewers than liberals. Probably all the police procedurals.

Nah, it's Yellowstone and its million spinoffs. Old people love that shit.

Expand full comment

Paramount+ is also the home of the entire Star Trek franchise. Hard to see many of those watchers as conservative (the only reason I subscribe to Paramount+) unless they don't understand the whole concept.

Expand full comment

Does Asli Aydintasbas know that Trump has repeatedly said that he deserves a “do over” of his first term because of how mean everyone was to him?

Expand full comment

Trump is evil. He is also experiencing some kind of cognitive impairment. The two are not necessarily related.

Expand full comment

Paramount+? Home of Blue Bloods AND Yellowstone? Even my spouse, who isn't too political said of Yellowstone, "I think this is for conservative men".

Expand full comment

Conservatives watch Paramount+ because of "Yellowstone" and (the awesome) "Tulsa King". We all know Sly Stallone is a Republican.

But...when "Yellowstone" took off, many of my Republican friends started a "We need John Dutton for President" circle jerk (John Dutton is the badass Yellowstone ranch owner that's played by Kevin Costner).

Boy, were they surprised when I gleefully pointed out that Kevin Costner is, in fact, quite liberal! After they stopped crying over this incredible betrayal, they switched their allegiance to Rip (Cole Hauser).

I'm not saying that someone cursed Oglethorpe with BATS because they ran the the GA Shakespeare Fest out. But I'm not NOT saying that either.
