I otter decorated my porch planter with gourds. Squirrels destroyed my pumpkins and colorful squash! (And the mail dude accidentally broke my ceramic jack-o-lantern!). It wasn't the year for Halloween decor at this house!

Well look who's all in for Tucker Carlson 2028!

Norman Finkelstein, Cornel West, and Richard Wolff discuss how Tucker Carlson has changed recently, with West saying that we should give Tucker a chance to prove he's really changed for the better, and Wolff saying that Tucker becoming more religious could make him pro-immigration.

It's a good thing the Iranian navy has been completely destroyed -- if this is what they can do on a daily basis when they don't exist, having them around would be *much* worse.

***Iran’s navy says two oil tankers have been damaged and caught fire in the eastern Strait of Hormuz after striking naval mines.

A statement carried by Iranian media said the vessels had been operating in “restricted and dangerous areas” with their tracking systems disabled, “ignoring warnings and established regulations”.***

Sources reached out to General Sylvia for comment, reaching his home. Sylvia's mother said Sylvia's busy, too busy to come to the phone. Sylvia's mother said Sylvia's trying to start a new life of his own. Sylvia's mother said Sylvia's happy so why don't you leave him alone?

And the operator said 40 cents more for the next three minutes.

I read that there is a trend in the Deep South for non-regular and younger voters coming out early, and that Callais is spiking Black turnout in the states where people have been disenfranchised. Good. I hope that deeply immoral SCOTUS decision blows up in their faces as much as possible.

A Seaside Shrine to the Slaveholders’ Insurrection

Jefferson Davis is the only traitor with a “presidential library”—and you paid for it. My visit to America's most appalling tourist attraction...

" After Davis’s death, the house, known as “Beauvoir” thanks to its stunning Gulf views, became a retirement home for Confederate veterans. Today, the sprawling estate is home to the preserved house, as well as a Confederate cemetery and the 24,000 square foot “Jefferson Davis Presidential Library and Museum.” On TripAdvisor, it is the #1 most highly-recommended tourist attraction in Biloxi. It hosts fun runs, Mahjong tournaments, and an annual “family-friendly” birthday party for Davis himself, with free cupcakes. Golf carts are available to rent, for cruising the grounds.

Beauvoir has entirely evaded the last decade’s reckoning with Confederate monuments. Operated by the Sons of Confederate Veterans (SCV), it is maintained as an unapologetic shrine to the slaveowning South: a 60-acre argument that the slaveholding states should have won the Civil War, that slavery was a non-issue in that war, and that Jefferson Davis belongs in the pantheon of the great men of history. (And as a corollary, that Abraham Lincoln was a dictator, fool, racist, and liberal.) Visiting it is a surreal experience, like stepping into an alternate history novel where Confederate “presidents” receive the same monumental, hagiographic libraries that U.S. presidents do. To anyone who understands something of the horrific reality of the slave system, it’s as if postwar Germany had let neo-Nazis take control of Hitler’s residence and turn it into a massive tourist attraction selling leather-bound editions of Mein Kampf. (In fact, the Berghof was deliberately blown up in 1952 precisely to prevent such an outcome. Hitler’s birthplace and Munich apartment have been turned into police stations.) "

"Residents of a North Carolina community expressed outrage after their HOA (Homeowner’s Association) proposed higher fees that would total a whopping $90K per year, a move they say would push them out of their homes.

Members of the Magnolia Cove neighborhood in Sherrills Ford reached out to the media as the HOA unveiled a proposal raising monthly fees to $7,500.

Residents say the fees were recently raised to more than $1,200 over the summer plus a $10,000 assessment fee – with fees originally around $158 five years ago – but the latest increase would raise them by a factor of 6.

The HOA claims the higher fees are necessary to cover the “legal and collection costs from owners’ accounts that haven’t been paid,” arguing that “Owners who stay current help bring those costs down over time.”

Zonath of Ur's avatar

LOL a 50x increase in fees to collect unpaid fees makes no sense. Someone's going to jail for embezzlement before this one is over.

tek's avatar

There's a lot of this in south Florida.. The HOAs and/or management companies defer maintenance/upgrades, let people slide on their payments, and then something happens and "holy shit! we don't have any money!"

swmnguy's avatar

I wonder what their true insurance situation is, also.

Rosy red ASS's avatar

Hubs and I wouldn't even look at condos when we were house hunting because we had heard nightmare stories about HOA's. Our tiny house is on a busy street but at least we don't have to deal with that shit.

"Fees" are what's going to end civilized society. I'm moving to a new apartment soon. Not only is the rent obscene, they tack on a mandatory "lifestyle fee", where you have to use certain services whether you do or not. You also have to pay to insure their property and to maintain the grounds. I looked at several different apartments and they all have these now. Rent is insane, but now you have to pay even more for these fees.

The reading assignment for the book club is just 210 or so pages long. I figure I can squeeze it in before the meeting on Sunday. As a college graduate I know the value of coffee and have study habits that......oh.....excuse me. My phone is ringing.

OK I'm back. That was my Beautiful Friend at the Retirement Community reminding me about our date tomorrow night and how it is my turn to show up with the ice cream.

Where was I? Oh yes. Looks like my original plan has been altered and I'll just have to lurk nearby while the rest of you discuss the book. Enjoy!

It’s only the first section Sunday. I listened to it on Libby and they didn’t mention sections only chapters.

Has any administration ever been as overtly hostile to veterans as Trump's? And, more importantly, why the ever loving f**k are veterans still tolerating this?

There's a house in my neighborhood that had a pair of "Veterans for Trump" signs out in the yard for the longest damned time. Dude finally removed them a few weeks ago. I was wondering what the precipitating event was that finally got him to take them down.

He still has his angry-eagle "We the People are Pissed" sign out there, though.
