The real problem with both situations is that the public desire to finish the job wasn't there - shortly after the end of WWII there was a burning desire to just go home, and it took a huge amount of effort just to keep troops in place for the occupation. As we didn't have the resources to run what was left of Germany without the cooperation of Nazis we did the same hand-waving thing to make them "ex-Nazis" and looked the other way as war criminals and collaborators went back to government and running industry. We also imported a bunch of Nazis for our post-war effort to have a real missile program, and we knew what they had been doing during the war.
We still have both problems - Nazis and their brothers the white nationalists.

The BIG point here is the right is trying to de-legitimize the FBI (and DOJ) EXACTLY LIKE TJG attempted to de-legitimize the voting process... long before he lost.
This is NOT the only instance of this; there are voices from the right (amplified by Fox) calling for the FBI to be torn down... because they 'messaged' the synagogue incident inappropriately?
Gaslighting on a major scale is under way here folk and the closer investigations get to Jan 6 conspirators and TFG the louder it is going to get.
