LOL, I was wondering if anybody was going to bother reading the links I left at the bottom of the post re the Péclet number. I should have know there'd be at least one engineer that would groove on it in this bunch.
The lost "Beverly Hillbillies" episode: Elly May adopts the whole piggy family, but Granny wants to butcher and cook this new (to her) hog meat, and enlists Jethro to help. No worries! Elly May gets help from Jed and Miss Jane to save her new pets, and Mr. Drysdale takes them all out to dinner at the latest and trendiest Vegan joint in Beverly Hills.
"Inevitably, as I nose my way through dead strangers’ belongings, my mind slips to my own estate sale, the one that will spring from my death. These thoughts follow a pattern: First, I am exhilarated by the thought of what a fantastic sale that will be, and long to attend it myself."
"The Soviet bloc began its collapse in 1989, bringing an end to the Cold War. In order to have vivid, emotionally weighted memories of what it was like to live in fear of communism, you’d have to be older than 50 at the very least. That’s a little over a third of the population; many people that old couldn’t care less, and for the rest it’s a weird idea out of ancient history. Just saying “That guy’s a communist” not only doesn’t immediately create fear and hatred toward the target, it barely makes any sense."
Communism has been used as the boogeyman by politicians and the MIDC to sow fear in the US population for years since WW2. I grew up with it. Was I ever afraid of Communism? No, that was ridiculous. I remember a guy in San Francisco, the 80s, saw him often in North Beach. His name was Jack and he sold copies of "The Daily Worker" on the street. People lovingly referred to him as the "last Communist in North Beach". The danger was coming from members of our own government, using that boogeyman to try to nullify our democracy and trample our rights. The current regime in the WH is using the same tactics today. They have decided "immigrants" are the new boogeyman to be afraid of.
i think being 49 and living in one of the top five target cities as a kid got the job done. Red Dawn helped. it's more fear of Russia than communism though.
Mr. "Balls and Strikes" Roberts should be impeached for lying to Congress. Mr. "pubic hair" Thomas and Mr. Alito should be impeached for endless corruption. The other three should be impeached just to keep the other three company.
So, SCOTUS refused to throw out E. Jean Carroll's $5million dollar win but Trump is also trying to get them to throw out her $83 million dollar win. Will they? I wouldn't put it past the conservative 6.
I just read this rather horrifying story about the late Cuban-American artist Ana Mendieta. I'd been vaguely aware of her, but she was still way out past the orbit of Pluto in my awareness. It's quite a terrible story.
I love that Cathy Weaver thing about estate sales. Friend who is REIGNING QUEEN of estate sales has, since the time she was a kid in foster care, furnished her entire life with objects from the dead. When she herself goes, that is going to an estate sale for the ages.
I'm having some nostalgic fun right now after finding out Hamilton "superstation" CHCH is playing The Rockford Files. For younguns not familiar with the series it starred James Garner as private detective Jim Rockford, who was pardoned after spending 5 years in a California prison. He lives in a oceanside mobile home and will take a case for 200 dollars a day plus expenses. Besides Garner the regulars included Noah Beery Jr. as his dad Rocky, Joe Santos as LAPD cop Dennis Becker, Rockford's frequent but reluctant source of information, and Stuart Margolin as inept conman Angel. And some would say Rockford's '70s gold coloured '70s Firebird. It ran between 1974 and 1980 before its abrupt cancellation.
It had been a very long time since I saw a episode, and I was surprised that the late first season episodes I've seen so far have been "woman of the week" types. For example the episode "Claire" revolves around Rockford's former fiancee, played by Linda Evans, who is in mob trouble. The pacing is pretty laid back.
The theme song and opening images changed subtly over the years, but it always began with Rockford getting a quirky message on his answering machine.
A new version will be airing on NBC this fall, with David Boreanaz as Rockford. It's a very different world than 1974, so whether it will have an audience remains to be seen.
Loved the Rockford files as a kid, and as an adult watching late night re-runs. I know she wasn't in all that many of the episodes, but always loved Rita Moreno's part as Rita Capcovic.
Somewhere on the youtubes, there's a mashup of every Rockford episode answering machine message. Larfed my arse off listening to them all stacked against each other. Couldn't find it this time (though there are mashups of the beginning of various seasons) or I'd post it.

I've been known to be a little pecker-y.
I love that the zoo calls the babbies “peclets”!
Hooray for the peclets!
More appropriate than ever

: )
It's hot!
See, we don't need the National Weather Service.
But we need their maps so that Dear Leader can draw the paths of hurricanes with his magic markers.
I thought that was the tumor on his prostate.

Somehow I don't think Trump's new slur of "communist" is going to have the effect he thinks it will.
Fetterman announced he's running in '28 as an Independent because he can't belong to a party that's Communist.
Thus avoiding an embarrassing primary loss.

Only 15 signatories to that silly centrist screed.

"Promise to America"????
More like a collection of self soothing platitudes with no real answers...
Fuck off with that shit- DCCC!
Atlantic article says the gift link is expired? :(
I know I’ve said it many times before, but man do I adore and admire Madiba Dennie.
I want her to come over and tell me all the ways John Roberts is a hypocrite and a hack, in that special way she does.

I have always had a strongly and strangely visceral dislike of painter Frank Stella, but this article just seems to affirm that visceral dislike.

One of these things is not like the other… also may require some assembly.

Happy Canada Day everyone.
