So, pushing migrants even further to the west, to cross the mountains and enter at the Big Bend. Going back to at least Carter, it looks like nothing more than the "kill em off, or wear em down" before they cross into the US.

This is exactly what Biden said:

"We spent as much as we could on other stuff allowed by the appropriation, but we still have this $190 million what has “BUILD WALL” written on it. So we’re going to have to, well, you know…"

Well, here’s the thing. I live in NM with a woman Gov, and where cannabis, abortion, and being LGBTQ are all legal, and we don’t burn books.

And we kinda WANT a wall all the way around fucking Texas. (Which under abbot now appears to be an insane asylum.

And trivia fact: NM is the only State with two official languages: Eng and you guessed it, Spanish!

could we just take the $190 million to build like a ten, twenty foot section of wall with a diesel fueled mechanical facsimile of Donald Trump’s rear that bends down so Republican pilgrims can kiss it, out of solid gold? Seems like a win-win. See, I did a bipartisan!

But seriously DHS, if you’re not spending $1000000 per foot on that wall you’re doing it wrong.

Can we please, for the love of all that is actually sacred, not made up sacred to fit some stupid paranoia by a brainless goon whose daddy didn't love him as much as his other brother, get rid of DHS? Has it ever actually done anything positive for the country? Because all I recall is a lot of whining and begging. And that's only after the half-hearted fanfare from the propaganda pieces the Bush II Administration managed to screw out of the media.

You might be better off appreciating what a flipping awesome president Biden has been and still is. Student loan relief, covid vaccines, roads and bridges being fixed, finding ways to protect women’s healthcare, cash in our pockets, supporting unions, working toward an environmentally healthy future, expanding NATO and solidifying our allies. Decency, civility, kindness, and a deep love of our Constitution. Willing to place YOU and your well-being above partisanship!

But ur stuck on a stupid number? Jeepers my friend. Maybe think deeper and see whats actually important.

stupid number? No idea what you mean? You mean the 40 miles of Trump wall he's building in my state? Biden is and always has been a center-right dem. It's only the shifting overton window that makes him seem liberal intstead of a family-separating, Trump wall building, oil drilling, centrist that he is.

Alternatively, Biden could have said his hands are tied by two dozen environmental laws on the books which he cannot break. Biden has chosen which law he prefers to follow as a political calculation.

Appeasing right-wing border perspectives is dumb. Gaslighting your voters about it is dumber.

Expand full comment
Robert Eckert's avatar

No he could not. The law is clear that the mandates of the DHS override any environmental laws that are in the way.

The law sucks, to be sure. It is, however, the law.

Yes, he could.

And then someone would have to file a complaint in federal court….

Or, Biden could fold his hand upfront. As he did.

I'm going to get flamed I assume, but the 20 mile section of wall the administration is putting up is a high traffic zone for migrants and something needs to be done to show that the federal government takes the situation at the Southern border seriously or republicans will exploit fears of uncontrolled immigration to victory in '24. Biden was right that a wall along the entire Southern border "is not a serious policy proposal" because so much of the border is already protected by natural obstacles to migrants traveling on foot. Furthermore the environmental impact and maintenance requirements of such a colossal project don't justify their existence . In areas with high foot traffic not doing anything to slow down the flow of economic migrants is a recipe for a GOP win in '24 whether we like it or not. The odious tactic of GOP governors shipping migrants to democratically controlled states without a plan is having it's intended effect, overwhelming social services in those cities. We can be a nation that meets it's international and moral obligations where migration and asylum are concerned while building barriers in select locations to limit immigration to a level that can be maintained without overwhelming the social services of the cities that migrants are ending up in. Between Trumps "great wall" and the fictional "open border" of red state governors fever dreams lies a sensible range of policy choices that can help to manage the flow of migrants in a humane and economically beneficial way, and pretending it's only an issue to bigots and assholes is a losing strategy.

For sure, lately they mostly do. Also Biden gets no credit for implementing a phone app that asylum seekers must use to schedule a hearing. It was a bumpy launch, but it's improving and slowing down the rate of crossings in several areas.

Many do, it's a thing. I'm not pretending that by itself it is a solution. It's an avenue to legal entry that didn't exist before. It's janky, people have trouble getting it to work sometimes, but it's getting better and is the only attempt lately to address current challenges with asylum requests and the remnants of the "remain in Mexico" while awaiting an immigration court appearance policy.
