While I'm I'm here, I will let you know that my family and I, including now almost two year old Aria, are doing as well as can be expected in the world of 2026. I do miss you all, and this place, but my mental health demanded a departure. I'm still sending my $5/month, though.

Because I needed a mental health break from stuff, I just found out about Fukui's passing. It's truly a dark day. I never had the pleasure of meeting him in-person, but I feel a great loss today. Thanks for making me laugh good Sir! RIP!

I'll pencil in the 21st but my own dad is at the end of his life and I ... may be elsewhere. Raising a glass to Gav, and one to Bill, two princes of men.
Last time we went out for drinks he was quick to grab the check against all our protests. I told him he's lucky I don't like confrontation but next time I'm going to shamelessly grab the check.
Awoke this morning to the devastating news about Fukui. Although I always meant to join one of the Wonkmeets in SF, I never made it. So I missed my chance to ever meet him. He seemed like an absolutely stand-up guy who was wicked funny, wicked smart. And what a generous, giving person he was, taking the time to share his knowledge to raise up others! His low tolerance for liars and BS matched my own. I am going to miss the late-night banter between him and other Wonketeers, which was the fuel for raising my mood after a long day of the fecal firehose of information facing us every goddamn day.
Rest well, friend I never met. Hoping your journey is joyful and that you meet up with all other kind, hilarious spirits on the other side.
I'm sorry to hear about Fukui's passing. I enjoyed his non comments about his love of racing, the back and forths with this recipe sharing community ;-), and I considered it a honor when he liked my non comments, including the humorous ones, the way out there ones, and even the serious ones. Enjoy the other side, and you will be missed.
I just made a simple salad by slicing up a third of a cucumber (a third because that is what I had), a green bell pepper, and a tomato. Added a tiny amount of wasabi sriracha, a small dollop of mayonnaise, and a splash of sesame seed oil and stir. It works surprisingly well as a refreshing side dish that has a lot of nuanced yet complimentary flavours.
I think it would have been even better if the mayonnaise was yoghurt based, or maybe just yoghurt with a dash of lemon juice and some sugar (if the yoghurt itself doesn't taste very smooth.) Though the creaminess of the mayonnaise is a core part of the experience, so maybe sour cream if you don't like mayo? I dunno.
Slice it to the size that lets you get a bit of each ingredient in your mouth with each bite. And I should have used a yellow bell pepper so you see the difference between pepper and cucumber more easily.
Oh I forgot I added a tiny amount of onion as well, maybe a third of the smallest onion you've ever seen in a store. It was barely larger than a bulb of garlic. I'm not sure if it is needed, but I figured I might as well use it since it was left over from my other dish: Pistolet bread with chipolata sausage, some raw onion, fried mushrooms (champignons), and a small amount of mayo to keep the onion from flying all over the place.
The variation options are endless, but sesame seed oil is definitely my new favourite flavour to add to random dishes.
