The Canterbury Tales, The Wife of Bath's Tale. Chaucer used something like seven different spellings for the "c word" and I think that four of them are used by the Wife of Bath, each reflecting a different dialect.
The "c word" was in common usage then, and was not considered to be taboo.
When I was in Jr High, I took Latin. One day were were going over the numbers with the whole class chanting them while the teacher marched back and forth in the front of the room...
unus unus unus unus ...
duo duo. duo. duo ...
tres. tres. tres tres ...
and so on.
While we were doing six, the vice principal's face appeared in the window of the classroom door to see what was going on with a whole classroom of 8th graders yelling "sex sex. sex. sex .. "

Just a reminder that we're assembling tips, tricks and explanations of how Substack works from the reader/commenter end (mostly), because substack itself doesn't have much to tell us. It's under construction, and probably always will be, but such as it is:
Nothing illustrates the horseshoe theory of politics more than how both the far right and the far left give Putin BJs these days. The far right loves him because he’s a corrupt authoritarian who gives conservative Christians special privileges. It’s like Russia is their utopia now. The far left, however, love Putin because, as the Bulwark notes, they view America as the greatest evil in the world and anyone who opposes America must therefore be good. They’re the same purity ponies who spend all their time attacking democrats for not being liberal enough while enabling and encourage republicans to go full fascist. They’re the Susan Sarandon’s who thought electing Trump would trigger the socialist revolution they desperately crave.
I actually have more contempt for the purity ponies. Yes, MAGAts and rightwingers are evil pigfuckers who are tearing down our democracy. But at least they’re trying to accomplish something. All the purity ponies want to do is watch the world burn.
Totally agree. The RWNJs will show up to vote and they will consistently vote for the most rightwing candidate, even if that candidate is not as rightwing as they are themselves or as rightwing as they want them to be. This kind of dedication (which the adamant progressives eschew) has moved the Overton window to the right dramatically since Reagan (who would be considered a RINO these days). Those “purity ponies” have robbed us and themselves of an opportunity to move this country in a more progressive direction (see current SCOTUS).
I am a staunch liberal progressive, as many here are, and we need to be absolutely pragmatic about what we need to do win elections, following the strategy I mentioned above would be a start.
I think that just like Republicans claim Democrats are the party of racism from the Civil War and ties to the KKK a century ago along with systemic racism throughout the country until the 1950s and 1960s, some people still associate Russia with some type of socialist utopia. Which it never was and stopped even pretending to be after the collapse of the Soviet Union in the 1980s. Failure to face changes in social and legal morals and ethics results in people sticking with outdated and often false associations.
The GOP definitely does not associate their love of Russia with any love of socialism, it's the idea that an authoritarian who thinks the way they think can get rid of that inconvenience called democracy and rule of law.
Just like the most adamant leftists still associate the word Russia with a mythical workers' paradise where the people controlled government. but Russia has never been a real socialist state and now does not even pretend to be one. And that for some unknown reason a strong central government of unelected people will protect the proletariat. Like our Supreme Court thinks that 5 unelected lifetime members of a politically appointed court will invariably protect democracy and individual rights without bias or political influence.
How far can Cannon go, before she's charged with obstruction? Is it okay, when done from the bench? (Am I taking this too far? Would it be irresponsible not to?)
This is something I'm going to dig into... A few weeks ago, an Army general died in a Piper plane crash near Aberdeen MD. Great guy. So, I was poking around the internet to see if there was an update to his crash investigation and came upon Russian propaganda. It was viscerally shocking to me. The propaganda says that he actually died in Ukraine by Russian fire and that the Pentagon was hiding it. That's some fucked up shit.
Today’s header gif comes from a Silly Symphonies short. More deets here: https://martiniambassador.substack.com/p/a-moth-and-his-flame
This is exactly why you should NEVER fix a broken window with a wadded up piece of paper; the damn fairies will be infesting the place in no time! 🧚
For a more secure solution, use duct tape instead; no way the little fuckers are getting through that shit. 👍
The overt sexiness of the female moth might well draw the ire of DeSantites.
I think if you flew into Ye Olde Wonkette it would magically spell out "Drunke"
In a literature class we had a reading that referred to a woman’s “quaint”
Couldn’t figure out what it meant. Professor Curran explained it was the “c-word” and wrote it on the blackboard 😮
She quickly erased it.
I could have imagined one of the priests walking into the classroom for the next lecture and seeing THAT on the board

The fascists in Florida will be burning Geoff’s works also.
I'm not sure they can read Middle English.

FACIO!!!
We just got into a whole thing over here about how much we miss hand drawn animation. There's really no substitute.
O these poor deluded mortals. Fuck not with the Shakespeare squadron for in truth they write, and truth shalt not favor thee, o dickheads.
No Evan, we *don’t* know which right-wing MAGA sadness video going around you are referring to; there’s just so many, after all ... !
PLEASE TO SPECIFY, KTHXBAI ;-)
There are tens of thousands of them right now, and more on the way.
Goddamnit Evan! Whar Folding Chair link?
Hope you’re not following in SER’s footsteps and just making up clickbait titles on the fly!
So someone with 216 shares of Target sued them because they didn't assess the risk of being Woke and losing all that money for Pride Displays. The group that filed the case is America First Legal (run by Stephen Miller). https://www.reuters.com/legal/target-sued-by-investor-over-backlash-lgbtq-merchandise-2023-08-09/
"guys like Trump and Elon who have lots of money but what they really crave is for people to respect them and think they are cool"
Just a crazy suggestion, but maybe if that's what they want they could, I don't know, try to BE respectable and NOT be deliberately douche-bag-y?
Probably way too much to ask, huh?
It was so nice to see Tori Amos in current time, singing and playing in the wind, thank you.
The wind was an entire character in that concert. It was kind of amazing.
Yaz!

Robbie Robertson is dead and Noam Chomsky is still alive? There ain't no justice!
I think that most "purity ponies" on the left live in St. Petersberg, work on troll farms, and speak Russian as a first language.

Sinead O'Connor: rest in power, beautiful lady.
Heartbreaking.

I think she’ll be forced off the case before it comes to charging her for obstruction.
"that video that’s going around, you know the one" No, actually I don't.
Going by the folding chair reference in the headline, it's this:

I think he's talking about the one from over the weekend at a rally where Trump smears Fani Willis for "having an affair" with a gang member.
offs. No, I blessedly missed that one. Sometimes it's a /good/ thing that Twitter imploded.

Yes I remember sneaking a copy of As you Like it home and hiding it under my bed with a bunch of Playboy magazines
