I finally got around to reading up on the allegations against Brand. And Jesus fucking Christ.
Apparently his line is that everything was consensual. And apparently there are a number of people who are willing to take his word over that of five, count 'em five, accusers. I don't know if there's any number of accusers, or any other evidence, that could ever convince anyone like that.
This is very disappointing. I remember reading a thoughtful but still excoriating essay Brand wrote for (I think) The Guardian when Margaret Thatcher died. The man is clearly smart and, on that issue at least, on the right side. I find it utterly bizarre he's so desperate for approval that he would turn to people I'm sure he would normally disdain.
I used to wonder what he was doing married to Katy Perry, who doesn't exactly seem like his intellectual equal. (Although for all I know, she might be.) Now that's starting to look like the most normal thing, relationship-wise, he's ever done.
I don't think it's that he was desperate for approval. I think it's that he was outed as a predator by other comedians in 2018 and realized a reckoning was coming, so he made a deliberate shift to fascist-adjacent woo, knowing those people would support him no matter what.
Katie Perry left him because she found out who he was, and that makes her pretty smart in my book.
Brand has been pretty insightful about class issues, but for some reason Brit celebrities seem more susceptible to anti vaxx shit. MIA (Brit-*ish singer) is also otherwise a progressive activist but is on some vaccine conspiracy wavelength
Somehow David avocado Wolfe has shown up to defend brand too. I had almost forgotten about him and his horrible memes that I had to keep reminding older liberal friends on Facebook to STOP FUCKING SHARING
Yeah this article basically sums up the FarQ Party. They are either true believers or opportunists who push the same non-factual bullshit and they don't care if it is true or not as long as they believe it to be true, they can get others t do the same, and/or it hurts the right people.
Brand seems to be one of those people that went to crunchy/conspiracy theorist after getting off heroin that he went RWNJ. He also strikes me as very susceptible to flattery and is easy to manipulate as long as his ego is being stroked the right way.
You know, I’m not sure I believe that. I’m actually deeply cynical about Brand as RWNJ getting there organically, pun intended, through the granola-to-antivax pipeline. I think his conversion is about as sincere as Milo Yannopolis’s, which is to say not at all. I think he was just savvier about moving over PRIOR to accusations being made public. Then you get the Qnuts on side because they already think you have The Word.
After all, he was one Katy Perry memoir from this shit hitting the fan…
Why is it that so many prominent antivaxxers have credible allegations of sexual harassment and assault raised against them? Maybe the vaccine forces men to behave more appropriately toward women they encounter when going about their lives.
Huh look at that, I was still following Brand on Twitter. I guess the Deep State silenced him enough I hadn't seen any posts from him in so long I didn't think I still was. Maybe I muted him? I dunno. Why was I following him? Because back at the point I did, he was doing the got sober, eating healthy, getting his life together kick and hey, I'm down with that. But since I hadn't seen his stuff lately, I had no idea he'd veered over into anti-vaxx BS (little say the current turn of events). Ah well. He was never the funny one in the Goth Detectives anyway.
I still know legit progressives who cannot get it through their heads that the RW doesn't care if they make up outrageous lies just to damage opponents and make the words they use "groomer, pedo, etc" utterly meaningless anymore. While the real groomers and pedos lurk in churches, scouting, and cpac.
every single aspect of this is so fucking predictable.
Brandt is going to try and handwave everything away with highbrow-like gobbledygook and the usual suspects in the nutter butter aisle have a new show horse for as long as that's gonna last.
The Right hates Occam’s Razor. Hm, Russell Brand used to be employed in Hollywood and by the BBC, but hasn’t been for years, turned into a kook, and has a major beef with the media…
I wonder why? Could it be because nobody wanted to work with him because he’s a serial predator? Could it be that he started maligning the media in anticipation of this all coming out, since journalists have been trying to get this story out for at least five years?
Russell Brand has always been just another poseur - someone who wanted to be a "rock star" without actual ability or talent, but wanted to live that "rock 'n' roll lifestyle" that would eventually kill actual rock stars. (For instance, today is the anniversary of Jimi Hendrix's death.)
And now he has achieved his phony "rock star" status: serial rapist.
I never really thought he was all that funny, tbh. But then I've realized I've been slowly losing my sense of humor over the years, so take my opinion for what it's worth.
In non-horrible comedian news, Maria Bamford's new book "Sure, I'll Join Your Cult" is in bookstores now. Infinitely funnier than Russell Brand, Maria's comedy is worth checking out.
She was a co-host on my favorite podcast "Bonanas for Bonanza" for three years up until this summer. Even in the silliness of the show, she would slip all kinds of mental health things in. More than once I went into a therapy session armed with a new term or concept I learned from her.
I started watching her show, “Lady Dynamite” a few years ago and it was weird even for me. Went back to it recently and I’ve finally caught up. Yes, it’s weird but it IS funny.

In short, enemies of human civilization.

He got off heroin pretty early in his career. I think this was a calculated move to get support when he was outed as a predator.

Uurgh, imagine having ANDREW TATE come out in support of you. Does he want Brand to look MORE guilty?

Russell Brand flatters himself if he think whatever nonsense he says about vaccines is important enough for there to be a conspiracy to silence him.
I'm not sure he thinks that. I think he knows his followers will think that.
Have you met my friend the internet?

grifters gonna grift.
Sometimes, it seems that when some fading star starts spouting out Q nonsense that they only doing it to get back in the newspapers.

Of course not! It’s Deep State gobbledygook!
Something, something.
Discordian Law Of Fives.

What was that last word? I can't seem to make it out...

You are correct - Brand was never funny unless you are into the "ironic" racism and sexism of, say, a Daniel Tosh.
I didn't know Russell Brand had veered into antivax lunacy. I replaced him with Sasha Baron Cohen years ago.

Can confirm the non-horrible — several of my friends have regularly opened for her and have nothing but absolutely lovely things to say about her.
Also, I've been reading you since the Death and Taxes days. Thanks for helping to radicalize me.

Oh thank you for the reminder about Bamford's book! Just placed it on hold.
I love, love, love Maria! She's just a gem.
I’ve seen her live show. She’s awesome!
