As I said earlier today on the birb site, it's quite possible that had they (you know who THEY are) not dropped that fake ad a few weeks back, Swift might've kept her decision private and we'd be left only assuming she did the obvious. But no, some stable marketing genius decided to be a ha ha funny pronkster which in turn kinda forced her hand. More four dimensional chess I guess, it is beyond the likes of my feeble feminized mind.

I just saw a statistic over on Instagram that something like 300k users have checked out vote.org today by following the link that Taylor posted.

Actually, a lot of smart people are saying this was bad timing. It steps all over the "endzone dance" that Kamala should be doing after the debate.

Interesting from Vox, given that many of us immediately know the references (highly redacted for length):

The minority of American voters who lack a strong attachment to either party tend to pay less attention to politics than partisans do. Any political actor trying to reach undecideds must therefore mind the knowledge gap that lies between themselves and their audience.

Trump routinely betrayed signs of being the kind of man who knows who Loomer and Nick Fuentes are and who can probably recite Fox News’s primetime lineup.

Trump invoked “Aurora” or “Springfield” without any explanation, as though these places were synonymous with well-known disasters (rather than obscure right-wing conspiracy theories). And his answer only got more puzzling from there, as he declared that “the people that came in” are eating “the dogs” and “the cats.” To anyone else, he sounded like a Fox News superfan who’d accidentally ingested some of his grandson’s LSD.

He chose to summarize her position in shorthand while needlessly distorting it, suggesting that she wanted to “do transgender operations on illegal aliens” (rather than provide such care to them), as though the vice president had intended to impose gender transition on detained immigrants against their will. The effect was to make Trump’s attack sound more baseless than it actually was.

He repeatedly declared Harris a “Marxist,” a term that might not have much resonance for non-college-educated voters who weren’t fully sentient during the Cold War. He also referred to “the Nord Stream 2 pipeline” without immediate elaboration and touted Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s praise, an endorsement that may carry weight with the extremely online right but means nothing to most ordinary voters. He referred to the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot as “J6” — an abbreviation that few who have never been subject to a microblogging platform’s character limit would have any reason to use or even recognize.

Whatever our political leanings, those of us who read the New York Times each morning or watch Fox News every night — and scroll X all hours in between — live in a different universe than the people whose fickle allegiances will decide November’s election. WE know what references to JD Vance’s “couch” are supposed to convey. THEY know what it’s like to have healthy and fulfilling hobbies. We are not the same.

I'm gonna have to disagree with Robyn, and others, on this one. Taylor Swift endorsing at this particular time is not intended to mobilize her fans or move the needle. It's kinda the opposite. It's the one and only time since Joe dropped out where she can "endorse," as her fans and her brand pretty much demanded, but where it will be overshadowed by far more important political news and not dominate the news cycle.

Look, I like Taylor, but she's made it abundantly clear that she'd rather stay out of this. A lot of her young fans have MAGA parents who might take a Swift endorsement as a cue to stomp all over their teenaged lives. She CAN'T stay out of it, not with MAGA appropriating her image with a lying "endorsement." Correcting the record on the one day when it's second-tier news and won't be talked about much is the next best thing.

I'll change my opinion if she works to mobilize voters in the coming weeks, but I really don't think she'll do that unless MAGA forces her hand again. This announcement is more of a warning to Trump-land than anything else: "Don't make me campaign against you. Keep my name out of your shit mouth."

The timing was perfect. She waited until Trump failed miserably in the debate. Looks like she at least gave him a chance.

What would be your explanation, then, for why she endorsed Phil Bredesen and Jim Cooper in 2018? Do you think someone or something forced her hand then? What forced her hand when she endorsed President Biden in 2020?

Expand full comment
Barney Rubble's avatar

I disagree. She's explicitly encouraging people both to register and to vote. If she left it until later in the cycle, the registering part would become pointless. There is nothing to say that she won't make any further statements in support of the Harris campaign before election day.

Yes, she's saying what she's saying. But she's saying it at the one time it will get the least attention. Nobody's got time for Taylor Swift coverage on the morning after the debate. And I’m pretty sure she knows how PR works.

Who knows what she’ll say in the future? I doubt even Taylor knows. But what she's done to this point is guarantee this will get the least attention that a Taylor Swift endorsement could possibly get. I doubt that's accidental.

Expand full comment
Rhiannon's avatar

Seems like it's getting a LOT of attention, and another way of looking at it is that she's actually coat tailing on the debate AND bringing more attention to a winning debate. I don't know her truth of course. But also, these days actual teenagers are a pretty small fraction of her fans. I'm not sure that's a huge concern for her.

Expand full comment
Ward From Cali's avatar

I can't read Taylor's mind, but if she's a decent person, foreseeable consequences to her youngest fans will be a concern. Even if there aren't that many of them, they're vulnerable, and we live in a country where it's demonstrably clear that MAGA parents are perfectly willing to harm children, even their own, in pursuit of their bigoted fantasies.
