It becomes more understandable if one believes Putin gave Trump "secret information" about an imminent attack that would be prevented if only a sufficiently strong and brave Trump took immediate action. Trump has repeatedly proven he rejects U.S. intelligence while taking anything that Putin says as gospel, so it's not a nutcase scenario. A Persian Gulf War shutting down Middle East oil transportation would make the new Russia-to-Western Europe oil and gas pipeline a big long-term win for Russia. If there is a U.S.-Iran war, NATO would probably sit it out, further driving the wedge into U.S.-Western Europe relations, providing another Russia win. From day one, Trump dismantled the U.S. diplomatic establishment and stopped forming coalitions, allies, or even polite relationships. This hasn't made the U.S. safer, more prosperous, or more respected. Before our previous hideously expensive Gulf Wars, we at least put some effort into ginning up a bunch of lies about Kuwaiti freedom and weapons of mass destruction to justify the upcoming events. Trump and Pompeo haven't bothered to flesh out whatever specific "imminent threat" made the attack on Iran's military leadership necessary, and I personally believe that's because Putin didn't need to tell Trump any details beyond it being something that a true global badass would do, and I don't see any likely consequences of Trump's taking the advice except more long-term wins for Russia, all of which will laughably go down in the history books as "unintended consequences"....
