KOSA is evil incarnate and a Reichwing homophobe's goddamned wet dream.
IN NO FORM is this shite acceptable. How about parents monitoring their devilspawns' cell phone usage or--GASP--even limiting/barring their access? HMMMMMMMMMM?????
Incredibly frustrating, because the Horseshoe Theory left continues to insist that this (very bad) bill existing means that the Democrats are "normalizing fascism" and aren't any different than the Republicans, and therefore you shouldn't vote for Harris. I genuinely saw this on Twitter already this morning.
This as opposed to the far more simple explanation that Robyn provides above: that people's brains fall out of their head when children are involved in any kind of political calculus, and a well-meaning party of more or less good people is trying in good faith to do good, helpful things, either unaware of or hopeful that they can ameliorate the more grotesque effects of a party who wants nothing more than to weaponize everything.
I think it's true that most of this legislation the right keeps pushing to "protect our children" is really about censoring and controlling adults. They generally won't come right out and say it because, you know, some adults have a bit of a problem with busybodies and religious fanatics always telling them what they can and can't do.
Speaking as one of the first human beings that was able to be online at the age of 15 when the WWW was invented - the kids mostly did not go into adult spaces! Adult spaces are boring! We were much more likely to have adults invade the kid friendly spaces instead!
I think YouTube's failure is a shining example of the problem. If you label your content kid friendly there, then you lose a lot of advertisement choices and are held to much stricter standards. In exchange you get the kid friendly tag and people can find you by that easily, and if you get an outside sponsorship then the advertising restrictions don't matter as much.
The result has been a ton of actual intended-for-kids content NOT being labeled as kid friendly, because the content creators would not make any money.
i thought that parental filters were a thing - and also aren't they always banging on about parental rights to control their kid, shouldn't those parents be, you know, doing that?
Or, and here me out, we could have rigorous classes on isex ed and being safe on the internet, and free mental health care for thise under 18. Ehh? Any one in Congress want to sponsor my bill?
Oh, hell no! I dropped 60 pounds since becoming vegan, which is great. What's also great is that with my metabolism, I can snack frequently. I am in a good place, thanks.
As someone who mightily struggled with anorexia & EDs: it is a real thing & terribly harmful. Tips, tricks, & all of the bones you can see on people being glorified.
This is always a difficult circle to square, really. I assume a lot of lobbying of politicians about the practicality of such bans is important but I also know a lot of politicians are afraid of headlines where "Protecting kids" and "sexual content" are aligned. (After all, it's perfectly fine for the leading cause of kids dying to be gunfire here, because guns are sacrosanct)
I really don't know what the *practical* answer to this except for excessive lobbying and advocacy towards Blumenthal.
Anytime a D finds themselves even considering co-sponsoring a bill w Blackburn, they need hit pause @ minimum & def do alllll the legit (not just lobbyist backed pre written by Alec legislation) research. Sheeesh Dick, the world already has Russia, China, Iran, plenty govts w state sponsored censorship 🙄😅
Let’s figure out how lean in & own freedom expression while also heavily investing in critical thinking skills, self esteem/ Well ess & propaganda / media savviness, both identifying & discarding as designed harm not help, etc etc
Well, we have Ashcroft and we have Hawley and we have Bailey, all plagues on Missouri. I hope we hillbillies wake up and smell the rolling dumpster shit-fire, and do something about it.

I am bigly-er disappointed in Tammy Baldwin for supporting this bill. (She also voted for FOSTA-SESTA).
Yep. Embarrassing and ultra-fucked-up.

Ta, Robyn. Marsha Blackburn can't help but be an idiot.

Um, pro-anorexia content?
I have seen it. It gives tips and encouragement for those who are in the grips of an eating disorder.
I don't recommend it for adults, much less for vulnerable teens.
...and I've never had anorexia (though I did unwisely crash diet for weeks when I was young and not wise), but bulimia was bad enough.
DO NOT GO THERE.
Yes, pro ana sites are scary places.

Oh my God, I am so sorry. This is majorly fucked up.
Yup. It's a thing.
Google "Pro-Ana". There's more of it than you would think.
Jesus fucking Christ.

OT:
Finally figured out how to use the Spirograph.

this is making me nostalgic for the spirograph I had when I was younger, and fashion plates, lite-brite, I wish I still had them now.
I really liked that toy when I was a kid. It chewed up a lot of time, so my parents must have appreciated that.
My own kid liked it for about five minutes and then was like "meh."
It seems to me that if legislation goes around with the word "Kids" in its title, it's a bad sign.
Or TV commercial donation scams with earwormy jingles.
Yeah. The term has always mildly grated on me. I prefer children even though it is longer to type. Another favorite is little persons.
Isn't a kid a baby goat?
also my dad called us punkin's which I called my little ones too . family tradition.
I use spawn, for it amuses me, and annoys the right sorts of people.
It's the little things that make life worth living
So you're not going for SofaKing Jen?
