I just watched that fucking movie "Don't Look Up" and I am seriously considering driving down to DC and occupying the Capitol steps. We are fucking doomed, and I am so damned angry at these assholes who are just in it for their own power.

It was the Cuyahoga River that caught fire, on multiple occasions, not Lake Erie.

I'm not even in IT, and I knew nothing was going to happen. I remember telling a co-worker at the time that all the people selling their worldly possessions and moving to bunkers in Montana were going to look awfully silly. This did not sit well with him.2000 was the first (and so far only) time I've gone to see the Rose Parade in person. There was a really cute float featuring a "dead" Y2K bug.

For those interested - the text on the poster translates as "Long live the National Day of railroad workers!"

Sorry to say that it wouldn't help. The worst thing about the 2016 election was that it finally took my blinders off regarding the intelligence and morality of 50% (more or less) of my fellow humans. TFG was/is a joke, (shit in a burning paper bag on your doorstep kind of joke, true) but many of that percentage voted for him out of spite, racism, misogyny or stupidity or a toxic mix of all of those but nonetheless it made me realize that without some kind of radical change in people's understanding then things won't change.

I had hopes that when the pandemic rolled around that it would become a rallying force that would get people to learn that we needed to cooperate instead of vilify in order to provide for each other, but that has worked out about as well as the election.

We are fucked short term, but remember that history is long and humans are like cockroaches so more than likely we will survive in one form or another the collapse of our ecosystems and destabilization of our atmosphere. Gaia will shrug her shoulders and go about spinning up other life forms that can thrive in what we create and not GAF about whether or not the experiment that is humanity makes it or not. Of course this is little consolation to the individuals that will suffer because of this, but you need to remember that a significant number of those suffering wouldn't lift a finger to change this scenario anyway.

Weirdly enough I'm optimistic though, as there is a species level cooperative trait that has made us the apex predator on the planet, and possibly that will carry us through if things get bad enough.

I’m actually quite pleased that I trained my auto-correct to suggest “Assmouth” as soon as I type an “A.”

Still there is a time and a place for everything. I'm not asking you to change your mind or even shut up forever

Just for tonight because it would be a kindness.

To me. Personally. I'd like to hang out here to see in (can't say welcome) the New Year, but if people (anyone, not just you) are going to pick at old wounds,....

My answer is: the only people who are offended by my reminding them of how the Squad tried to destroy the BIF, are people who would have been happy with the BIF being destroyed.

Why would I worry about their feelings? How do they merit it? They are people who would be happy with lead pipes not being replaced.

I was part of the team on standby in the hotel directly next to our data center. We knew nothing was going to happen, and also had proof from Australia, Asia, Africa, and Europe that there were going to be no major issues, so we were already into the second case of champagne before midnight. We had the required phone checkin with senior management (someone’s gf was the soberest so she made up a name and read a short, scripted “all is well”) and we commenced serious drinking.
