Ya know, high school, (and even worse middle school!!) has always been a bit of a minefield, but I graduated in 1971- I can only imagine how much worse it's gotten since then. In other words-- you poor bastards.
For another another, kids having money on them for lunch at school can unfortunately lead to the classic “give me your lunch money” bullying scenarios.

Disclaimer: I know no one at Wonkette dismisses bullying as "just bullying, things kids do."
When big-for-his-age (or maybe held-back-a-year) Billy drags skinny, bespectacled Bryan out back of the school where two of Billy's friends are waiting and threatens to beat the snot of out him if he doesn't hand over his lunch money and then keep his mouth shut about it, well, that's just bullying. We'll have *another* talk with Billy's parents about his unacceptable behavior, but what can you do? Maybe try not to let him catch you by yourself. Maybe you should only go to the bathroom when there's a big group in there.
When Billy's adult version yanks one of those same people into a secluded alley where two of his friends are waiting, and they tell that adult to hand over their money or get the snot beat out of them, and by the way, it would be smart of them to keep their mouth shut about it, that person will be talking to the police in the next ten minutes, wanting someone to be arrested and put in jail.
I'm all for it, and willing to pay for it. I already do, being a taxpayer in California.
I was poor-shamed throughout my K-8 years, then in high school the lunch program wasn't available so I had to pack a sammich, which didn't exactly exude wealth either.
Arguing people, especially children, should go hungry, is fucking evil. I realize I sound like that weak-ass Jesus dude. You know, the one who didn’t means test the masses before feeding them.
The feeding the people thing was cool and all, but wasn't Jesus on TV the very next night being all like: "For a 30 Scheckel prayer donation you can get a hand-stitched Prayer Pillow...?
I could be wrong: it also might have been Benny Hinn.
Love love love the free school breakfast and lunch. It makes sure my intransigent teenager will have access to breakfast once their stomach wakes up, and means I don’t have to make lunch for my ten year old every day. Absolutely worth giving everybody eat.
My kid's schools, had parents fund an account, so the kids never had to have cash, but if the account was low or negative, they'd send automated texts and calls several times a day, even during vacations, of which you couldn't opt out.
"skipping lunch and spending their lunch money on coffee and cigarettes, which is what some people used to do" I wonder how you know?
So glad I live here
Massachusetts always makes me so proud! Couldn't be happier that we moved back here last year from red state hell!
Gods, I wish I could move back to Mass.

Isn't that weird how that works?
From the original 1946 legislation that created the National School Lunch Program:
"SEC. 2. ø42 U.S.C. 1751¿ It is hereby declared to be the policy
of Congress, **AS A MEASURE OF NATIONAL SECURITY**, to safeguard the
health and well-being of the Nation’s children and to encourage the
domestic consumption of nutritious agricultural commodities and
other food, by assisting the States, through grants-in-aid and other
means, in providing an adequate supply of foods and other facilities
for the establishment, maintenance, operation, and expansion of
nonprofit school lunch programs. (**EMPHASIS ADDED**)
https://www.govinfo.gov/content/pkg/COMPS-10333/pdf/COMPS-10333.pdf
Imagine that: school lunches are important for National Security. School lunches, apparently, should be part of the defense budget.
See if that gets the GOP on board.
(Sadly, it probably won't)
Coffee and cigarettes? I spent my lunch money on Hostess Cupcakes and Coca-Cola! What kind of little wussy kid must I have been.
74% of Americans and 63% of republicans?
can you think of two or three other things with equal or higher numbers that can't seem to get passed because: republicans?
I'm all for it, and willing to pay for it. I already do, being a taxpayer in California.

So you're sayin' nobody was jumping you to grab that ham sammy?
While banana republican governors are in a race to the bottom, democratic governors are in a race to the top. Change my mind.

Sometimes I get confused.
"Feeding children! That's positively communist! Let the little buggers feed themselves, dagnabbit."
My imitation of a "conservative."
Surely you jest. Aren't the Rethuglicans 'all about the children'? Pro-life and all that?
No. After they're born, they are Fair Game.
You give kids free lunch and next they’ll want other luxuries like health care.
