When I was little, I loved going to the movies in part because the background in scenes on the big screen always looked so velvety and sparkly to me.
I get the same effect when I encounter a fox – they're startlingly beautiful. Same thing with owls. Both gone in a second leaving me thinking, did that just happen?
A few years ago, I would occasionally see foxes in my area of St. Louis. I haven't seen any recently. Possibly related, the newspaper published pictures of a family of foxes with enough background to identify where their earth was. They were not in Fox Park, which anyway is named for the person who donated the land to establish the park.
One of the best PBS (Nature? Nova?) shows I watched was one concerning an experiment involving foxes being bred for their ability to tolerate human contact. The foxes with more tolerance for humans were bred with others while the more hostile foxes were not bred.
It was amazing to me how few generations it took to get pet foxes. This experiment was an analog for how wild wolves became snuggly doggy pets
Journalist Keri Blakinger, who writes on the criminal justice system, was just nominated for an Oscar in the Short Documentary category for their film “I Am Ready, Warden.” The movie, in a word, is powerful. Blakinger, now in Los Angeles, was one of the few people writing on criminal justice here in Texas.
Hey, Editrix, Wonkstaff and Wonketeeers. Started reading in the Ken Layne days (led to some odd situations with the buttsecks jokes : / ) Every day is a tonic with you-all, appreciation from me, Buster Kitten & Thurgood Mewshall
I hate that this is literally an emergency broadcast message. I feel like a dick that I've barely even lurked here since the holidays and here I am with hat in hand.
I'm here at the public library using the Wi-Fi, having had to trek out in -1/-15 wind-chill to walk 1/2 mile from the shelter to catch a free shuttle to said library. After having to schlep to the ER via bus Monday to be diagnosed with pneumonia and the flu. Hoping they would admit me for at least several hours--that wasn't happening--then having to bus/walk back to the shelter.
I am not coping well mentally with my first ever diagnosis of those maladies.
I have the meds they prescribed me, but I need to renew my regular ones.
I have:
--No cell service, so I can't call/text the damn pharmacy. I thought to do it online--need txt so they can "verify" my acct. The one landline at the shelter for "guest" use is fucked up. There's no WiFi there.
--No money on my bus ride app. Hence, instead of catching the bus today (Monday was free rides) I've had to resort to the roundabout trip above.
--No money in the bank in order to add $$ to said bus app/cell service
--No one close to even turn to for a quick buck. A complete stranger working at the Job Resource Center last week gave me $7 out of his pocket because he took pity on the fact I had no money.
--This doesn't even include my other issues of not being able to find a job which is affecting my life situation which is exacerbated by being stuck in the fucking homeless shelter that is deteriorating in service since the St Vincent de Paul announced they are closing it June 30. The staff are sleepwalking their way to the end and the outside social services agency that was doing case management bailed out Jan 1.
Meanwhile, how ya'll liking this Fucking Hellhole we're now trapped in?
Sorry for money begging, Trix. If I had more than...15 minutes now...I'd do this properly through my regular Substack. I can only just repost the old link from November.
Because I'm feeling so low today, I forgot to say that yesterday my Brilliant and Beautiful niece jetted off for her semester abroad in Japan! I love her so much, and I love that this little perfect child is in my life, and that she's going to have such an adventure!
Of course this is making me depressed again, because I'm feeling like my life's over and I wasted it all and for what, but I'm trying to focus on how wonderful this will be for her.
Depression lies. Please don't let it convince you that you have "wasted it all". I said it before and I'll say it again: whether you know it or not, you have made a significant difference in the lives of others and you can continue to do so.
My oldest sister taught third grade before she stayed home to raise her children. Three decades later she was taking my dad to the hospital for some medical procedure and a doctor stopped her in the hallway and asked her "are you Mrs. xxxx who taught at ..." She said yes.
He went on to explain that she was the best teacher he'd ever had and that she was was instrumental in his lifelong love of learning in general and his interest in science in particular which ultimately led to his career in medicine. He's literally in the business of saving lives.
If you are able, I highly recommend seeking out some kind of volunteer work. As Jimmy Carter so aptly demonstrated, helping others can be the most rewarding thing we can do for ourselves.
I had to look up Jonathan Greenblatt. For the CEO of "the leading anti-hate organization in the world," he sure does seem to be fond of the Jeff Bezos supervillain look. In fact, he's rocking it so hard I did a double-take and wondered if autocorrect had somehow fucked me and pulled up a picture of Bezos instead.
That whole "family" full of malignant narcissists and enablers look kinda stunned that the Bishop stood up to them
Everybody light a candle 🕯 for the Bishop to protect her from the MAGAT harassment she is already getting from the likes of Mammon-worshipping SHannity, pls
HuffPost: Trump Pardons Man Behind Silk Road Drug Marketplace
"Trump announced he's issued a "full and unconditional pardon" to Ross William Ulbricht, the founder of the Silk Road drug marketplace, who was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole a decade ago.
"The scum that worked to convict him were some of the same lunatics who were involved in the modern day weaponization of government against me. He was given two life sentences, plus 40 years. Ridiculous!" Trump wrote on social media.
Silk Road was a dark web hotspot for selling various illicit drugs, including heroin and cocaine."
So do I have this right? Guy who enables illicit drug purchases AND human/child sex trafficking is GOOD. The Mexican cartels and smuggling accomplices who bring drugs into the country are BAD?
Sure seems like Trumps whole perspective on drug policy is based in racism.
Yeah, but we've already established that the American right is fine with murder. But they're still out there pretending that some core principle of their party is "protecting kids from sexual predators" while making it pretty clear they are the predators all the way down.
We've been conditioned to think of racists in a certain, southern way. Chump wears a suit and plays golf and travels a lot by jet. That's a pretty far cry from the trailer park.
He's the most virulent racist in America. The first, and most, important assessment he makes about anyone he meets is based on skin color.
When you only want the fig leaf of religiosity to cover your naked amoral nether parts, don’t invite a real Christian to give the blessing. The Pharisees didn’t like it. Neither did the MAGAts.

I want to play "catch your tongue" with that cutie!! Won't, cause he would play "catch your finger" better, but still!
That's a foxy post.
We are on the regular path of a suburban fox, who pops over the back fence, strolls through the garden and heads under next door's fence.
Once caught it digging up our flowerbed and burying some rancid paneer that we'd thrown out.

Don’t be fooled by adorable little Reynard. He sleeps with one eye open.
I know foxes are wild animals and I want them to stay that way, but it's -4F here this morning, and cuddling up with a fox is a very appealing idea.
I see lots of foxes around here during woodland hikes. They are among my favorite animals that are native to this part of the NW GA hill country.
Gives new meaning to the phrase Foxy Lady!

Could be done in one human lifetime, as I recall.
I wouldn't trust fox pets, they're crafty and vicious.
Fox blep, or, "A Fox Dreams of Small Lame Rodents."
Gekkering Jehoshaphat!
Ice cream dreams may not be the 𝘣𝘦𝘴𝘵 dreams, but they're up there...
If Progesso can make soup flavored cough drops, why no prime rib flavored frozen yogurt?
Doggos want to know!
The blep makes it extra kawaii.

Even Tiffany was rolling her eyes and making faces and being a regular dick. Boy, she's desperate for her father to even recognize her, isn't she!
The Holy Trinity is the true image of the American family.
God the Father is MAGA with serious anger management issues.
God the Son is an idealistic hippie who started a Jesuses for Kamala group.
The Holy Spirit is the desperate peacekeeper trying to get them all to sit down for Thanksgiving dinner without everything blowing up.
