Empathy is anathema to the GOP.

"Good Confederates." So, the "good" people who fought a rebellion against their own country in order to defend the right to own other human beings?

Mmmmmm, no. I gotta go with "No."

Yeah, I heard those dog whistles, too.

Mostly because Sam Bee was so pissed off about them. (ETA: In general, not in specific response to this speech.)

It warms the heart to see someone in a political party so filled with hate be so very human for a change, but, as she said, it's not enough. He needs to be human and do the right thing.

Very nice speech.

But ..

Is he still a Republican? A party which is homophobic and often racist and driven by hate? A party which adamantly refuses to do ANYTHING about gun violence?

Is he actually DOING anything at all?

Republicans stopped being fiscally responsible in 1980. Since then it has been the party of spend, spend, spend.

I got MORE ENRAGED when I found out it was a gay club. So yeah, my opinion changed. Of course, all that happened in the course of reading the headline... And yeah - he needs to change parties. His party left him long ago. The GOP should just rebrand to NRAGOP. Or we can rebrand them ourselves.

Looking at my content history, you will see I also get right mean about republicans. I am not pretending to be on a higher moral ground. But the truth is, fighting fire with fire - unless judiciously done - just creates a conflagration, which is where I feel we are. This whole thing has driven home to me that we do need to work together today to somehow get legislation passed. And then kick the Republicans out with votes.

A judicious use of fire - such as the awesome use of the filibuster by that Connecticut senator - that's fire.

Part of what happened to Congress was the elimination of earmarks and pork barrel spending. It was the way a lot of legislation moved back then. Of course there was a HUGE amount of graft and kickbacks, too, making the politicians extremely wealthy. Once that was eliminated, it hurt the Rs the worst. They'd always been able to get a Dem or two onboard with whatever questionable legislation they want to pass with a payoff or large donation.

So they brought in the god-botherers to make the arguments on a moral basis. There's enough of them out there to find one that'll be very happy to cater to your pet issue from the religious right.

Sad, but true.

I am not sure who you are arguing with or why. I support the demos, voted Obama both times, and am currently volunteering for Hillary. I would also point out that Clinton and Obama both had republican congresses they had to work with and Congress has the power of the purse. I consider democrats much better stewards of our money and also support their priorities for spending. If it's to prove my husband is secretly hypocrite or an idiot for thinking the Republicans are more fiscally responsible, all I have to say is that approach will not win you friends or influence people.

On that basis it's a fair assessment, but my point is to not always tar everyone with the same feathers, if you get my drift.....

Really lovely, however his religion and his political party are not kind or loving or any of the things he talks about in his speech. If he knows that and can recognize something better he should take active steps in that direction in order to make his sentiments actually mean something. Otherwise it's just a better-worded version of "my prayers are with the victims".
