Happity! Just got off the phone with DD & Spouse. She recently quit her soul-sucking job, the Xth of several since she graduated with a B.S. in "would you like fries with that". She said she was coming down with covid, and applying for grad school, and feeling stressed about it.
I have tried to not pester her about grad school, but from my perspective saw that as the only way forward. Her spouse has no degree, but is several years invested into a job that is covering their expenses, and has years to go before retirement.
The degree she would be going for would allow her to work anywhere and is in a high-demand field. It would offer a lot of stability for them financially and would also help balance the load. They want to start a family, and I've told her that grad school is hard with babies and young children, so sooner is better.
Thinking about calling her father and asking if he wants to do a matching funds thing to offer her some support with expenses.
I just missed the punch card days at South Dakota Tech. They still had the machine for legacy stuff, but we were taught on these 300 baud modem connections to a Control Data (model name escapes me). Which crashed so often, a wise code writer typed 'save' after every line of code typed.
Same here. UW-Madison on Univac 1110 with Hollerith cards. It was like drop-off laundry: Leave a stack of cards and pick up the cards and output later.
I learned to program the drum card. That turned out [to be] really helpful.
I was coding for the Anthropology department- they were doing dig's in Israel in the Negev and I was creating a database for the levels material was found in for cross analysis with other sites...
My final Fortan project was to shuffle a deck of cards and print out the hands as one does in Bridge. Aced the course (forgive the pun). For the last run, I ran it at night and got a big data dump of Bridge hands.
I use no@thanks.com to get past a certain big IT company's new computer setup that insists you have a @certainbigITcompany account, use any password, it has been entered too many times with the wrong password...oopsie...I guess alocal account will be OK just this once...
There's a house a mile from ours with at least a dozen Trump/FJB signs and flags that have been up since the 2020 election.
Went by this morning and they're all gone. Not sure on the timing, because I don't go down that street often, but it's happened within the last two weeks.
I signed up for mailings from the Ron DeSantis campaign. They are interesting and scary. I read them. You don't have to, but we need to keep an eye on this guy. Anyway, I gave my name as "A**hole." So now when I get the emails they start with "A**hole, I am running for......."
On the main road I traveled on nearly daily until major road construction shut it down there's a really nice house with a flagpole that since 2016 has flown various giant Trump flags at the top, a smaller U.S. flag u see it, and then another Trump flag. Finally drove past their house yesterday after about six weeks and only the U.S. flag was up. I would love to know when they came down.
Just got a handslappy message from Nextdoor that I should "acknowledge the other person's perspective."
Yeah, naw. When you're a Moms for Liberty neofascist fuck, I am NOT going to say, "I see your point and understand it" before I launch into trouncing them into the ground.
Some points of view are not worth hearing, acknowledging, etc. Some points of view should immediately be trounced into the fucking mud.
I think ours is lit b/c we are a supposedly "liberal bubble" and are surrounded by places that might as well be Alabama Whitey Town.
So they post crap to rile up and "own" the people in my town, although there are now a concerning number of far right wingers inside my own town who are supporting Moms for Liberty and against Newsom taking on the School boards of some of these shit towns where they have passed policies to literally OUT students to their parents (which can lead to abuse).
There was a whole editorial about this in my local newspaper this morning whining about how Newsom was so quick to jump on these school boards, but not for re-opening the schools quickly enough after the pandemic, blah blah blah whine whine whine whine fart fart fart shit shit shit. :(
" I see you are espousing racist deranged viewpoints, which only merit total shunning. Decent people do not debate racist view points, because there is nothing to debate. Fuck off."
Once when told I should be nicer to a co-worker who thought my clipped businesslike manner was mean, especially because I was generally nice to everyone else, I pulled up some of his Facebook posts about how he longs for the day the evangelical church finally ran the country and he could participate in public stonings, starting with the gays. Reminded my manager my brother is gay, as are many of your employees. Pointed out I never used the language I wanted to, but when I had to communicate with him I used the fewest words needed to convey the message. Then I pointed out per his posts divorced women were in his second group, so her. I was allowed to continue without further comment.
I've discovered I likely do, too. Some have spouted opinions that make me think they are closet Trumpers (I work in a uni, so I just assume anyone working there is more on the liberal side, but some of the engineers in our office.....*sigh*).
What's to prevent me from saying, "I hear you, and I acknowledge that you have your own viewpoint, which has all the insight and depth of a greasy dishrag?"
I ran into someone who started this. Wasn’t even going to go there. Announced I’m a uni English Professor and that I would see her a Waste Land and raise her a Ulysses. That quiets them a little.
These drooling chuds wouldn't even know what any of those things mean, LOL! (Former English instructor here who did the soul-crushing adjunct thing for over 20 years and then noped out).
When I was applying after I got my PhD post 2009, I was most of the time one of like 400 applicants for positions.
And seriously, unless you have a LOT of support and $$$ coming in from somewhere else, you aren't going to get the writing done to get published.
I got scolded by one of my dissertation committee members about not spending an entire summer just writing to be able to publish something (instead having to work that summer as much as I could to support myself and my daughter), and she wanted to know why I wasn't able to do that.
I told her b/c I've gotten into a habit of eating and providing a roof over my and my daughter's head. She, herself, had zero concept, since she grew up the daughter of 2 prominent neurosurgeons, and at one point lived next door to Mel Gibson, and taught at the tony Sidwell Friends academy (where Obama's daughters went).
She had zero concept of having come from intergenerational poverty, and having this held out as a golden ticket that could likely never be attained in my position, without someone to support me while I did all of that.
And invariably, ALL of my dissertation committee members were from rich backgrounds, as were most of the faculty at my uni.
Yes! My daughter just noped out of getting her PhD in biology and took the masters. She works full time now and likes her job. Even though she got a stipend, I still helped her buy food. After she paid tuition, bought health insurance and paid rent she had nothing left. That's when it hit us how much privilege you need to earn a graduate degree in this country.
Thank you. And I shouldn't have to tell the other side I appreciate their point or whatever bullshit they just tried to feed me, when the other side wants to eliminate whole swathes of the population from public life.
Thank you. This, exactly. And places like Nextdoor (now run by the MacKensy group or whoever that consulting group is) are firmly on the side of the right wing.

That is the only thing that is keeping me on there and fighting. We should not cede spaces like that to the worst among us, and at least on Nextdoor, it's closer to home and I actually know some of the people I'm engaging with.

Julian Zelizer, a guy who I don't know anything about, is talking about how we shouldn't let any of this Trump shit seem "normal." That's what's been bugging the shit out of me. The last time I he was arrested (3 days ago?) the network news spent about 5 minutes covering his arrest.
I remember the news during Watergate, and there were HUGE headlines, and wall to wall TV coverage about Nixon's criminality.
Reagan hurried Murdoch's citizenship along, so Murdoch could start ruining America as quickly as possible. Foreigners weren't allowed to own media properties at that time.
No, in part because cable TV was barely a thing at the time it was repealed. But it did put constraints on MSM that required giving airtime to opposing views, and I believe it also limited the number of news outlets any one company could own (if it wasn't that, it was another statute that Reagan axes around the same time).
Adding emphasis to text here in the comments is a bit like typing on an old fashioned BBS (imagine a monochrome CRT, and I don't mean the historical context kind).
You may remember, if you are an Oldz: letting someone know you MEAN it with all caps or *bold/italic* indicators. Describing well-know images with text. Having to actually spell out our thoughts.... in WORDZ! We need more ASCII images, but they are kind of a pain in the ass to construct, and sorta don't work well with a non-monospace font.
That's right around the time I was introduced to the concept. It was a part of a closed system - the mainframe computer at The Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington. I hated it until I loved it. It wasn't like things are now, because we actually had to use one of the schools terminals (in the Terminal Room) to access it. But it was pretty cool none the less.
Well, fuck. I was hospitalized in June for asthma. It's getting worse again. It's a weekend and I have a bottle of prednisone. I hope I don't have to page a doctor and start doing the prednisone again to keep me out of the hospital again. This pisses me off. But not too much, because I have asthma attacks when I get pissed. On that note: Fuck republicants.
I had a horrendous asthma attack during a massive LA atmospheric inversion but learned how to short-cut future attacks by pursing my lips (as if playing a wind instrument) and forcing the air back up into my lungs.
After mastering this one exercise, I have short-circuited every future attack although, to be fair, as I moved to Florida for my sins, these exercises don't work as well when Pudding Fingers is slashing throats.
I had idiopathic hypertension with blood pressure that was so high that two doctors had trouble measuring it. I was supposed to go to the head of the line in the emergency room. (The internist's office was in a hospital.) The ER doctor decided to do a spinal tap because I had complained of vertigo. As he inserted the needle, vomit spewed forth. I said: "I'm going to decline this procedure."
*Three hours after I arrived at the ER* I started to receive treatment. Not a misprint....
Ahhh the 80s. My wife was an 80s metal girl and her hair was at least that big. I spent the decade being an ultradork.
Having such a fun Saturday night, running AV for a church group at work (art museum, not a church). Well, every day comes with an ending, I reckon.

Well. Engineers - there's your trouble right there.
What's to prevent me from saying, "I hear you, and I acknowledge that you have your own viewpoint, which has all the insight and depth of a greasy dishrag?"
LOL!!! That comment would be removed for being against Community Standards for "incivility, unkindness, or disrespect."
But they can basically call me a "shitlib" in other words, and trounce me that way and that's apparently OK.
And some people aren't worth debating.

Exactly. So of course I wound up in something even more insanely competitive.

Sure, there are two sides for everything, but that doesn't mean that one of those sides isn't completely moronic and deserve to be tolerated.
Thank you. And I shouldn't have to tell the other side I appreciate their point or whatever bullshit they just tried to feed me, when the other side wants to eliminate whole swathes of the population from public life.

That's kind of what I've been saying, only in more polite terms, and I'm the bad guy that gets in trouble for it.
But they can rant and rave with their anti trans bullshit all day long and nothing seems to happen to them.
Why? Are these assholes acknowledging yours? Or anyone else's?
Nope. In fact, I've gotten 2 recent death threats that higher up admin on Nextdoor had to deal with.
You should reply with "I do acknowledge her perspective. Her head is up her ass"

Yep, know your pain- the fire situation has me wheezing and reaching for inhaler...sux!
The comment about breathing is good. You might try qi gong? My husband has chronic asthma (so I understand very well) and finds qi gong very helpful.
We also brew a tea (herbal) which helps him.
Ref Herrigal's Zen in the Art of Archery and try the Zen breathing. I decided that it equates to 4 cycle engines instead of our usual two.
Climate change is making people's allergies worse, so this might be weather related.
Hang in there!
Take a look into breathing exercises.
I'm not kidding.

After mastering this one exercise, I have short-circuited every future attack although, to be fair, as I moved to Florida for my sins, these exercises don't work as well when Pudding Fingers is slashing throats.
Don't fuck around! Do what you need to do so no ride in an ambulance!
The hospital is only a quarter mile away. So, I'll just walk if I need to. Saves money.
I was not being serious with that non-comment.
Oh good. My idiot boss did that a few months ago and what the ER doc told him was: if you'd been 20 minutes later you'd have been dead.
So don't do that.
Meh.
Been there, done that too many times already.
Please do not repeat.
