I think if the Feds had been able to protect the newly elected Black lawmakers, it would have eventually worn down the Klan etc. But they let southerners depose many of those lawmakers, and turn the South into a region where apartheid was accepted.

When I was a smol bot, I lived in Mt Shasta, California. One of the closer towns (maybe 1/3 of the way around the base of the mountain) was McCloud.
It was a company town, with all that implies about trapped workers, except the product was lumber. And not the only company town in the west.
