A suspicion I've had is that a certain percentage of males have gone through a gay/ trans "phase" simply because of bullying, stereotypes and our restrictive views of masculinity. I have run across at least one especially pitiful "ex gay" whose narrative fit the bill.
The second scenario cropped up with "women's baseball" all the way back in the 1930s. There was never any talk that those involved were anything but straight men. It also seems likely that management and officials tolerated it in the hope that it would get more people in the stands.
