I seem to recall that in Heinlein's Revolt in 2100, the protagonist's faith started to waver when he realized that he wasn't being promoted as a priest because he hadn't done anything he could be blackmailed for. The church wanted people they could control.
When I lived briefly in South Carolina in the 1980s they had literal Jesus football billboards, in which the Son of God [heavenly choir here] endorsed the local high school football team. I'm guessing those have not gone away, although they may be digitized somehow.
About 1965 I was sitting in the Youth Group (Sunday School for adolescents) in my Southern Baptist church. The Youth Group leader, the minister's son-in-law, explained why proper behavior on a date was important. "I'd go as far as a girl would let me, on a date.
