Not an alien attack or meteor heading for Manhattan. Just aircraft photographed with a slow shutter.

I received a gift of grace and joy this morning. I hope I can tell it well enough to share with you.

I was at the Bagelry. I was by myself and it was crowded, so instead of the 4-top comfortably in the back, I took the only 2-top open, next to the front door and the coffee station. I sat there for a few minutes, waiting for my food and drinking coffee and reading the news. A woman asked if she could borrow the extra chair. I said yes, of course, expecting her to take it away, but she sat down and joined me. She was just tired from standing.

She had a bright and kind face, so I started small-talk-chit-chat.

"So, any big plans coming up"?

"Well, I'm dying of pancreatic cancer. I'm living out each moment I've got left as fully as I can."

I think I kept the shock from my face and said something like "well we're all on the same road" and she agreed, and we went on to chat.

What did we chat about? Oh, the usual. I saw a picture of her son, and agreed that he's a handsome fella. Her friend is visiting from Arizona "to help with things" and provide some comfort. They’ve been friends since they met at college in Minnesota when they were both 19.

She loves it here in Northwest Washington state because she loves hiking.

I have to emphasize that this woman was as full of life as anyone you might meet today. I would even say "joy". Certainly kindness. Those few minutes we spent together brought my whole day up to a new level.

I promoted my upcoming choir concert, of course, I mention it to EVERYONE I meet, and she said, "June 1, that's my 79th birthday but I probably won't make it that long." and I promised I would dedicate my performance to her spirit, her kindness, her joy, and her life.

And I will
