US buys 81 Soviet-era combat aircraft from Russia's ally costing on average less than $20,000 each, report says

The US has purchased 81 Soviet-era combat aircraft from Kazakhstan, a report from the Kyiv Post says.

Kazakhstan, a historic ally of Russia, is engaging more with Western nations.

The planes could be used for spare parts or as decoys in conflict regions, the Kyiv Post reported.

It was a bit eccentric, but essentially harmless.

There is a spot in Nth Carolina with the Ten Commandments big enough to be seen from passing aircraft. They also had the largest Christian cross in the world at the time.

If Saudi Arabia had just bombed the place, they would have claimed that it was provocation or the like.

Ah so it Tore A Town Apart because some people were being utter assholes.

Expand full comment

It’s NH friend, forget about it.

Expand full comment

<Soon after Ms. Gendreau’s remarks about the mural, residents began flooding the local paper with angry letters. A local bank asked her to resign from its board of directors, she said, pointing to the “hurt” she had caused; she complied. Encouraged by North Country Pride to raise their voices, hundreds of people showed up to condemn Ms. Gendreau’s views at select board meetings in September and October>.

It's one person causing this, not the whole state.

Expand full comment

NYT being fast and loose with the "tear the town apart" idea? YOU DONT SAY

lol what I figured. More exposed "asshole" to "the rest of em"

Expand full comment

It's not so much "Live Free or Die" so much as it is "Live and Let Live", mostly. Oh, sure, we have people in my town who put a "No Child Porn Library, vote no on 2" sign on their truck but they are in the minority.

Expand full comment

I have the feeling it did not Tear The Town Apart so much as expose "assholes" to "the rest of them"

Expand full comment

It's that one woman, Carrie Gendreau. I've been to Littleton and know someone who owns a business there. Like a lot of NH towns, it's a 50/50 split of ideologies. Most people get along and respect beliefs but it's zealots like this woman who stir up the trouble.

Expand full comment

Ah well, she's got supporters.

But even exposing one asshole is a start.

Expand full comment

She's a Bob Jones University graduate. NH is one of the most agnostic states there is. That stuff doesn't play well here but it's a loud minority because of press coverage. If out of 10 people, 2 believe her garbage, the press cover it as 50/50, you know, one side and one side, not weighted in how many believe what.

He rented it from another state that does not have that stupid ass law. And being Canadian, dude probably did not realize that different states have different laws even about small things like that, and just thought it was cool.

If so, add "out of state rental" to the actual reason he was yanked besides DWB. The two in combination were probably irresistible to the cops.
