It'll be both. First the renters, then the landlords, then the individual homeowners. My state (Illinois) is distributing $300M in emergency rental and mortgage assistance, but it's nowhere near enough.

And yet again, the Democrats will have to be brought in to clean up the Republicans' mess, whilst Republicans bitch and moan about how the cleanup is jacking up the deficit.

I know a number of people who own 2,3, or 4-unit rentals. They'll still have to pay taxes, whether they have any rental income or not.

Petty capitalists can shield income from US income taxes by buying two, four or six unit buildings and taking out mortgages. They can deduct interest paid in the mortgages from their taxes. But they either pay the mortgage installments or lose their investments. In the long run, if successful, they build up the sizes of their estates.

Edit. They’re like urban kulacks.

My sister's ex used to buy up some shitty properties and rent them out to people. They were mostly single and double units. I guess he would qualify.

It just hit me. We've got all those military personnel down on the southern border, don't we? I've never heard of them being reassigned, and the problem sure seemed too serious to be quickly wrapped up before the pandemic hit.

And the pandemic did hit. I haven't heard of any migrant caravans down there since the virus, so we should have all those soldiers down there do pandemic-related things like, I don't know, build temporary housing for homeless people.

I mean, we've got all those soldiers down at the border, right?

"Democrats are now in serious danger of losing Minnesota for the first time since 1972. It might not happen this year..." - to summarise, the article you just read was panic-porn with no relevance to the current electoral race. What an irresponsible headline.

You did notice all the stories about Arizona, Georgia and possibly even Texas turning blue, right? Realignments happen. They don't mean we're fucked from the get-go.

I don't expect a "smooth transition of power". More like "Lawyers, Guns, and Money" playing on the radio into 2021.
