I humbly posit that the elephant be replaced as the icon for the GOP with an ostrich.
At the local, county, state, and federal levels they're nigh-always sticking their head in the ground to hide from the obvious...and from the inevitable. And they do it in a systemic and endemic fashion 24/7 as they try to gain the upper hand in the culture wars. Now they're focusing more information and materiel on the health wars.
Honestly don't know what's worse for me, that it sickens me how cowardly they are, or that it terrifies me how little they care for others, especially for other side of the aisle but even for "their own."
Years ago I thought it was obvious that when they bitched and whined about SJWs, social justice warriors, that it was crystal clear that they were, in fact, SIWs: social *injustice* warriors.
When it comes to people ignoring risks: Traffic deaths are still horrifically high, and in the USA even rising. But we're used to getting into several tons of steel and flinging it past people at deadly speeds, so we don't care about those deaths until they affect someone close to us, at which point most people will find reasons to blame specific people instead of the general cause. The same will happen with bird flu and other future pandemics: People will blame specific people, traits, or behaviours before they will even consider blaming general societal patterns.
i hate to say it but the next pandemic, people need to go hard on the consequences of refusing to follow scientifically proven advice - put them in camps (i don't say that lightly) and prevent them from all access with civilised society - those that survive will either have learned their lesson or be too broken to resist should it happen again - and as we continue to expand travel, the next pandemic is a when not an if. i got no sympathy for the damage these fools want to do to everyone else cos they're afraid of a needle and masks make them itchy
For money reasons. Gilliam's Jabberwocky spelled out precisely how much the money class cares about people dying if it will impact their profit margins to make them not die.
If we lock down and do not move around and are afraid to go out and about and spend all our money, they will not have as much. Therefore, nothing to see here.
I am not being cynical, they're using conspiracy bullshit to further money, all it is.
I only had to read as far as “bringing the ostriches here to study whether they develop natural immunity,” and it just continues to confirm what I suspect: that Kennedy wants to ignore disease and prevent the use of vaccines in order to achieve the Holy Grail of “herd immunity.”
It’s part of a two-pronged tactic from this maladministration. The other, of course, is to eject from the U.S. everyone who isn’t white and Republican. Herd immunity will ensure that only the best white people remain to repopulate America.
If they'd think about it (they won't) they'd notice that herd immunity has never developed on its own - that why we are still dying from flu, rsv, measles, etc. And why we aren't dying from small pox. Duh!
Please don't make inaccurate statements about medicine and biology. We have developed herd immunity to lots of things, we're immune to the bacteria and viruses in our drinking water, food, air, soil, and our personal intestinal tract content and on our skin, pets, and the rest of our environment. We are swimming in a swamp of tiny parasitic bacteria and viruses, looking to access our nutrients, and we're fighting them off without antibiotics or vaccines almost all of the time.
The question is not whether you can get herd immunity without vaccines (you can), but whether it is worth it. So if a vaccine is better than not vaccinating, then vaccinate. Vaccines save a lot more lives than they harm, and they do so a lot better than natural herd immunity.
Until is it their loved ones (if they are capable of love--which at this point seems improbable) who get deathly ill with a virus that is totally preventable...then they might, maybe, possibly reconsider. But probably not.
Trump seems to be okay with changing the names of things, i.e. Gulf of America. How about we change the name of HHS to IIS? Illhealth and Inhumane Services?? Has a nice ring to it and it certainly describes RFKJr's approach to his job.
The Ernst comments give away the entire MAGA plot: “we’re all gonna die anyway, so why delay your chance to have burgers with Jesus in heaven by taking some stupid vaccine? Suck it Jews, Muslims, Buddhists, and inexplicably wrong kinds of Christians! I have faith and millions of dollars, so if you don’t see me at church during the next pandemic, just know it’s because I’m rich and hanging with my money instead of getting a horrible illness from you dirty fuckers. Thanks for your votes, which I will not lose until someone more awful comes along.”
OT maybe slightly but tangential? Witchcraft, magick, sorcery? Joan of Arc was martyred on May 30. She was accused of all those things PLUS dressing like a man, the worst sin of all!
This demented administration with a demented chief is doing a lot of things wrong - mainly out of deranged ideology combined with woeful ignorance - but arguably the wrongest, most destructive aspect of all is its approach to public health. Robyn's description of the way it ignores the possibility of a bird flu epidemic is one instance.
And women's health, including reproductive health? These misogynistic incels roll on the floor at the thought of denying women treatment for breast cancer, cervical cancer, or ovarian cancer, if they even have any awareness that such things exist. That's before we even consider health care during pregnancy.
The morons who still follow TGP - I hope the numbers are shrinking drastically - just took vast offence at a comment by Michelle Obama to the effect that “Women’s reproductive health is about our life. It’s about this whole complicated reproductive system that the least of what it does is produce life.”
“It’s a very important thing that it does, but you only produce life if the machine that’s producing it — if you want to whittle us down to a machine — is functioning in a healthy, streamlined kind of way.”
Naturally the response included a lot of remarks about the former first lady really being a man. Had to. These mugs will never get over that delusion. And Danielle d'Souza Gill squawked, “Motherhood is the most beautiful and powerful gift God gave women. Creating life isn’t a side effect, it’s a miracle.”
Yeah?
The fact is, the list of things that can go disastrously, dangerously wrong with a pregnancy even for a young healthy woman is long and scary. Miscarriage. Ectopic pregnancy. Being as ignorant of these matters as the average bloke, I can't think of more off the top of my head, but there's plenty. As for God - according to the Bible, the beautiful and powerful gift he gave women after Eve ate the apple was to thunder out, "I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and they conception; in sorrow shalt thou bring forth children."
And as far as abortion being contrary to God's will goes, it's a simple fact that plenty of women, multitudes, miscarry spontaneously and early, often without even knowing they're pregnant, with multitudes more losing their babies after they damn' well DO know they're pregnant. They can't get the appropriate treatment for that now, in states like Texas anyway, without risking a murder rap.
Anybody who wants to claim that abortion is an abominable thing and a defiance of God's will had better try explaining why God does it all the time.
RFKJr Taps Joni Ernst For Bird Flu Response Management
"That $700 million earmarked for vaccine development will be redirected where it's needed most: my new Department of Mass Graves and Quick Lime" the plucky Senator announced.
It's not a great mystery why they're doing shit like this. The explanation is simple. There is ONE cold-blooded, eugenicist in this administration, who is actually doing everything possible to perpetrate a genocide rather than just dream of one, and his name is NOT Stephen Miller.
If he were a true eugenicist, he'd go full Skoptsy and display the results on TV. As an example to his maga incel fans showing the solution to all their troubles. I'm sure his buddy Putes would approve.
I'm sure there will be no cases of bird flu......reported. Therefore it will not exist, and even if it does, it won't affect anyone with Money. Those viruses and germs know better than to make Rich People sick, or Republicans In Power. And who cares about anyone else?
Don't forget that Trump the King contracted a very serious case of Covid and, of course, got the very best treatments, which if I recall correctly, weren't available to average citizens. After that, he recommended that people get vaccinated for Covid. I guess he now thinks he can't contract it again. I do hope he's mistaken.
I haven't, but apparently his supporters, have. But, possibly, since this was all a "plot" by Dr. Fauci, to have him lose an election, they figure he's safe now.
that is already happening according to a Substack going by the name of SARS-CoV-2 (Covid-19); poultry workers are so far not having severe symptoms but that could change and of course those with compromised immune systems will ALWAYS suffer more. But then, the administration has eugenicists running things and don't care about them.
But, that's what I don't understand. Granted, Short Fingers is intellectually sterile, and simply not all that blessed with common sense, but surely there are others, including some of his rich puppeteers, who know their money won't really stop those germs and viruses from attacking them, and that regardless of my usual snark about Republican metamorphosis, they do still need safe food to eat themselves, even though they don't care about the lower classes.
The simple answer is that Trump is a stupid narcissistic asshole and in his mind our tax dollars are his.
Spending "his" money on helping people he doesn't care about (everyone not himself) is fraud and waste.
As to others enabling this, Stephen Miller is a good example.
Trump allows him a huge platform to exercise his hatred on others; it would take him hundreds of lifetimes to harm this many people, so destroying the Country/world is a price he's willing to pay to achieve it.
they don't have the capacity to think that far ahead - who will do the farm work after they deport the farm workers? is that why they lowered the age at which children can work, so the poors can send their children into the fields? who will do the low paid work in hospitals and nursing homes when immigrants are not here to do them? oh right, once they've looted them they get shut down; the rich can jet off to better nations that have fully funded medical care.
Well, there is that, isn't there? But will those better nations continue to let them in? Thinking too far ahead, I s'pose, because I certainly agree with you on that!

This is what many on the Right desperately want to see happen in a pandemic for some reason.
The reason? Hatred of the elites (scientists). Hatred of people smarter than they are. A need to show that they aren't so smart after all.
This!
Until is it their loved ones (if they are capable of love--which at this point seems improbable) who get deathly ill with a virus that is totally preventable...then they might, maybe, possibly reconsider. But probably not.
Remember people in ICUs begging for the vaccine? Doctors had to tell them it's way too late.
Amerikkkas suicide continues.

They really should do a birb flu vaccine for the cats.
Tomorrow's Headlines Today:

"That $700 million earmarked for vaccine development will be redirected where it's needed most: my new Department of Mass Graves and Quick Lime" the plucky Senator announced.
“We all have to die sometime” grinned Joni as she calculated how many supplies she was going to need to get the process going.
This is where her knowledge of pig-nutting will really come into play.
I got caught up on every vaccine, this last Dr’s trip.
Get them while you can, whoever thought our actual vaccines would ever be at risk 😞
