Shitting on Americans has been the entire GOP platform since Reagan, maybe since Nixon. They've been this way for a very long time. The only thing that's changed is they no longer bother to pretend otherwise.
Good one. I hadn't thought of the hierarchy vs. equality dynamic, but it seems right. We're not allowed to be critical of anyone, because we're all about being respectful of everyone. The opposite is true for MAGA. In that way, when you say sincerity and authenticity are everything, I'd add that expectations are everything as well.
I wonder how this relates to the NY Times and the media in general barely reporting on Trump's brown-liquid tweet. If the Times took his outrages more seriously, would we? And would that resonate with the non-partisan voters who decide elections?
Also: Obama asked for Dijon for his burger, but FOX quickly turned it into Grey Poupon
I'd also say that for Dems, we're less likely to be annoyed that right-wingers think they're better than us, because we don't really believe in the idea of better-or-worse when it comes to people
Amen!! Their shenanigans are just a sideshow to the truly despicable things he has done & is doing.
Blowing up ships & killing people?!? That’s an international crime!
Allowing Palestinians to literally starve to death, while he supports Israel?? Not to mention the senseless murders Israel committed in the last year😡😡
Any of us could write countless pages of all the travesty he has caused. Definitely holding Mike Johnson, Stephen Miller , Vance & on & on & on accountable as they have spurred him on & all the Republican reps. that don’t give a damn care about their constituents 😡 I hope everyone of them get elected out of office…
YES. The resentment is everything. Smartypantses, we hates them, Precious. It's gone 'way past city slickers vs rubes. Racism. MIsogyny. Bully wannabees whose dearest fantasy is getting to push other people around (especially women and non-white people!), to humiliate them and make them suffer the way Poor Mediocre Me has suffered.
I read Robyn Pennacchia because she's a thinker who often comes up with real insights, and this column today is another example: That the Right actually believes in hierarchy, and therefore believes everyone does, and in effect the Right projects this notion onto their opponents, is very similar to something that finally dawned on me a while back.
It was back when I was mulling over the extremist Christian belief that being gay (etc.) is a choice. Since it's obviously and demonstrably untrue, I was wondering if the preachers spouting all this were just wrong, dumb, liars, or what.
Then, amid all the scandals of preachers getting caught with their boytoys and male masseuses, I finally realized what was up. Those preachers believe being gay is a choice because, on a day-to-day level, it is true for them -- they are gay and they have to (due to their religious upbringing) spend their life "choosing", trying (in vain) not to be. They think everyone is like they are, that everyone could just be gay at the drop of a hat (or pants). They can't understand, or accept, that they are gay but others are not, so they project their own situation onto the world at large.
I often have problems with Matt Yglesias’s opinions. But his piece you linked to made a lot of sense to me. I have no idea why people care so much about who plays sports on what teams in school. But i know a lot of people who should be in our coalition hold views I find bigoted. What should we do about that? Saying he wants us to make nice with bigots and that is bad doesn’t address the problem.
When cruelty becomes the creed, mockery becomes liturgy. Trump just preaches what the party already practices. Every policy is a parable of punishment, every rally a revival for resentment. The miracle is that they call it faith. Blessed be the ones who keep loving a country that keeps mistaking hate for holiness.

I am just now getting to this - stupid FT jerb - and it is perfect.

Stinky pants.
Why is he wearing his oxygen mask like an idiot?
Nevermind... 🙄

Someone needs to invent a chill pill.

Ta, Robyn. Very true, all of it, but there's a big piece missing: the compliant owned-by-zillionaires media enforcing Murc's law.
"Burned bodies with missing limbs wash ashore after Trump's anti-drug boat strikes" Clearly, Sir is an Agent of God.
Fuck tRump his supporters and the regime!
"Take a moment and think about how the sentence “They think they’re better than you” makes you feel."
Of course they're better than me. Heh.
Trump can't even drive a car, I'm fine with letting him try his luck flying a F15.
