I support my local farmers as I can by buying produce, eggs, honey, etc. I have a patch at home where I can grow tomatoes and potatoes and some herbs, but I live in a four season landscape where sometimes the snow gets multiple feet deep and stays there for many weeks. I can't afford a deep freezer. There are "thrifty" cooks on line telling people to stockpile all kinds of things because brutal winter is coming and the tariffs will probably only end when Trump does. Sorry, I'm anxious. Maybe we should all be sharing our thrifty recipes handed down since the Great Depression.

Your state likely has something similar. There are a ton of good books out there about homesteading and gardening. One of my favorites is "The Backyard Homestead" but there are many to choose from.
My family is slowly gathering dry goods like rice and canned beans, things that will last a long time, require minimal prep and have plenty of nutrients. Not trying to sound like a doomsday prepper, but I figure anything we can grow or get from local farms takes a bite out of the mouth of the oligarchy.
Here in Dallass it's been so hot and dry that my neighbors with the huge raised beds in the front yard have left them empty. Normally, we would have a fall growing season, but it's still in the upper 90s to over 100 day after day after day. As someone who forages from the fall through the spring, things like wild arugula, chickweed, and wintercress, I fear that the foraging is going to be horrible or nonexistent from now on. Because people aren't watering their grass, so they're definitely not watering their alleys or the verges and so on. I would love to grow things, and even bought a raised bed, but it's still in the box. We've just fucked ourselves over so badly.

Why canned beans? Buy dry beans in bulk instead, soak them overnight before cooking. You do have to store them in rodent-proof containers.
