Consolidation in the seed and fertilizer markets has raised the costs of planting, consolidation in the grain and meat buyers has suppressed the prices of what farmers sell and growth of corporate owned farms and undercutting family farms by being to buy equipment at reduced financial costs. To solve this problem will takes generations of anti-monopoly lawsuits and restrictions of price discounting for large buyers. AS if our corporate overlords will ever let that happen.

I've been reading Dirt: The Erosion of Civilizations, about all the soil our rapacious farming practices has been destroying for literally millennia. It's a vicious cycle, because as farms "mine the dirt" (as this book puts it), it requires more and more chemical input and more and more developing of marginal land mixed in with a vicious cycle of debt and/or stupid ideological approaches to agriculture, and now with a nice little soupcon of climate disruption. It's really a fascinating book.
Maybe the farmers should be listening to him saying that he is going to end subsidies instead of saving the farmer. According to others who have commented and have knowledge of mass farming, that's gonna piss off a lot of farmers.
Also if you stop imports of every food we depend upon from beef and fish (shrimp from Vietnam and other far east suppliers) to avocados and grapes, you're going to have pretty bare produce sections in every single large and small groceries. Good luck with that fatman.
