Also funny from the indictment was the statement that this behavior was ongoing at the time of the indictment. The specifics of what the DA was looking into have been public for months, the daughter-in-law has been cooperating for months, yet Trump and Weisselberg still didn't stop doing the illegal shit they knew was being investigated.

3 hots and a cot. Fringe benefits.

Still, the rank and faithful of TFG's supporters will never get within shouting distance of perks like a company car or an apartment. So when he says this is about fringe benefits, a term they've heard and dream of one day getting, that's what's going to stick, no matter how many simplified examples you give them to explain why it's not. They don't have time for that.

Wait, omg, I am just now realizing that in addition to weisselberg -or whatever, spelling is hard- *not* claiming income, the trump organization was *still* reporting that income and using it for their own tax purposes?? Holy sh*t.... that reminds me of a nurse I used to work with who worked at 2 sister hospitals (different locations, same company) who was getting short term disability for an injury on the job, while *also* working extra shifts at the other hospital. When she was caught (duh, because payroll is same for both hospitals) they couldn't believe how brazenly stupid she had been

"Does anybody know the answer to that stuff?" Yah. I do. Company gives you a car to use for business and says, "As a fringe benefit, you can use this car for your personal trips as well." Business use is on the business. Personal use is a taxable benefit using the federal mileage rate and if you don't pay taxes on it, you're taking a risk. But rules only apply to the little people.

See my comment above about rules and who they apply to. They really, probably thought, "Surely they're not talking about us!"

These minor, petty tax problems! No one should worry about such trivial stuff! Right, Mr. Capone?

As Evan points out, a large chunk of Trump's supporters are prosperous owners of businesses who know quite well what fringe benefits are. Remember those nice folks who flew to the insurrection in a private plane? Or the Beverly Hills seditionist who made her living doing expensive manicures? They are Trumpers because they hate paying taxes, or love Gun-Jesus, or both. They're not hicks from the sticks.

You don't have to be a "hick from the sticks" (classist, much?) to lack access to the perks of the 1%. And I would argue that not "a large chunk" of the 70 million who voted for him are all prosperous business owners. They exist, to be sure, and they support TFG for the reasons you say, but they're called the 1% for a reason, too.
