It's sad to see Spirit go down (get it?) but come on, people, that's the nature of the airline business, at least since deregulation (1978). Who remembers Braniff, Pan Am, TWA, Eastern, etc., etc.

So this "guiding" of $$Billion ships is a "Humanitarian" move bc the hapless crews are running out of food & toilet paper? Humanitarian would be rebuilding a bombed school and providing aid and comfort to those who suffered losses there.

Crab cakes should be eaten betwixt two saltines with yellow mustard. Anything more is just showin' off, hon.

It's more than a little bit frightening just how much I loathe and despise the malignantly mendacious monsters whose monetary manipulations will leave us all hanging by the proverbial skin of our teeth simply to survive this summer. Overwhelming rage consumes me as I contemplate the frustration and unmitigated fear of far too many who now find themselves unemployed.

Capitalism is a caustic bitch that will leave millions of Americans miserably burned, blistered, and nightmarishly disfigured.

They save money on seat padding by stealing old yoga mats from community centers and chopping them to fit..

Sean Duffy pines for the days when people dressed up for airline travel, and then Biden came along and murdered classiness...

My theory why the Regime is letting Spirit die is this. (Yes, I know what I did!!1!) It's to speed up the consolidation of the US Airline System. Once Spirit is gone, the other airlines will merge with one another until there is only one airline to rule them all. Then Dearest Dementia Leader will demand that he, and only he, becomes the sole owner of this new airline, if this airline wants to continue to operate inside of our nation's borders and shut down all airports at the same time. The new airline will be called Trump American Airlines. This will last until Dearest Dementia Leader shuffles off his mortal coil and finds out that Dr. Jesus has changed networks, and his new afterlife provider is straight out of Hell itself. At least the environment wins, since there will be less planes in the sky, so there's that.....

My husband and I have taken Spirit often over the years, it enriched our lives by making trips affordable for us. Our first flight to Mexico was on Spirit and landed in Toluca, which is the capital of the state that encompasses Mexico City. Spirit landed there instead of the Mexico City airport, which made the tickets soooo nice and cheap! We named one of our cats Toluca to commemorate that trip! Later trips, we took Spirit to Cancun, direct flights and half the price of any other airline. Seriously, Spirit allowed us adventures that we treasure and talk about all the time, and could never have afforded without it. We became super efficient about packing because of Spirit too (no snark!).

Living near an airport, we would often see the yellow planes going overhead. It was nice to see them.

We are so sad about Spirit.

OT but tangential as it deals with fuel prices.

According to AAA, diesel is up $2.09 (59%) year over year. A standard Ford diesel pickup has a 34 gallon tank. It now costs $191 to fill it up.

Why do I care? At every No-Kings rally I've attended, the assholes who floor it to make noise and exhaust because they disagree have almost always driven diesel trucks. Not sure if that trend extends to less rural areas, but it's remarkably consistent in my neck of the woods. Maybe they can cut out that cup of to-go coffee or skip avocado toast to be able to afford driving around?

I watched Duffy on that Sunday yak show. The "journalist" asked him a number of questions which he could not answer, such as "When is the war going to be over?" before briefly finishing up by mentioning Spirit, and letting him get away with a quick bullshit answer instead of grilling him about why the govt. did nothing to help out. She also might have asked him if he was doing something to keep planes from having all these near-misses that are going on. But no.

clairence's avatar

that's because we all know the near-misses are also Biden/Buttigieg's fault.

We could switch to blimps, but the majority of the helium is tied up by the Strait of Hormuz

Resource NW's avatar

Congress shut down the only US source of helium. It was in TX, I think. Don't know why.

Rhand Holm's avatar

Use neon, that way the static build up on the blimp will cause it to light up.

TerseNurse's avatar

can't we just use cheap, safe, inflammable hydrogen instead?

Aquaman, Real Estate Investor.'s avatar

I mean, yes. Its actually much safer in airships than people think. Hindenburg had a skin made of rocket fuel.

clairence's avatar

should have gone faster, then, eh?

huh, seems like a design flaw

The supposed "reason" Trump admin people are trying to blame Biden ( besides the fact that he's Biden ) is that the Biden admin opposed the merger between Spirit and JetBlue, back in 2024 - because the merger would have been anti-competitive, leading to higher fares and fewer choices.

In the meantime American Airlines vetoed the proposed merger with United Airlines ( which United had initiated ) , reportedly because American feared it would be seen as "a threat to fair competition". No word as to whether Sean Duffy or Trump had anything to do with the decision.
