As a foreign observer, I don't understand why a justice's political affiliation should matter in his or her roll as a judge. i realize that judges are humans whose different perspectives affect their decisions, and there are different ways of interpreting the law, but a jurist at that high a level should be an expert at making legal rulings as "clinically" as possible. I don't believe this makes me naive. What gets me most about the selection of a new Supreme Court judge--and the intense political wrangling and fear that now accompanies it--is not the arbitrary, partisan nature of it, though that is disturbing enough, but rather the resigned acceptance that, once the new justice is seated--left, right or swing--his decisions will be predetermined by his ideology to such a great extent. It implies that the institution itself is or has become corrupt, and that the best one can do is try to maintain some balance so as to do the least damage.

The whole answer is inaccessible to any normal person, I'd say. But partly it's got to be egomania and the yearning to be like Putin, looting and plundering the remnant of his country. Trump also likes Erdogan in Turkey, for similar reasons; he's an authoritarian who's hurled scores of journalists into jail and brooks no opposition. (He's also an Islamist, but that doesn't offend Trump's principles, since he has none.) He thinks Duterte in the Philippines is just great, too. I expressed the opinion in the past that he'd even have a good word or two for Kim Jong Un, if the North Korean despot hadn't disrespected him, but I didn't really expect to see that happen. Now it has. Conferring legitimacy on that bastard by meeting him on equal terms, face to face, on a dais where the North Korean flag and Old Glory were displayed together … I'm far from unconditionally reverent of flags, but words fail. And I'm sickened by the way Trump came back from Singapore oozing sycophantic bonhomie with phrases like, "Strong tough leader … great personality … terrific guy … "Well, he's on record as saying Jeffrey Epstein was a terrific guy too.And without much doubt, he's in hock to Russian oligarchs for more money than he has, even on paper, and can only clear it by doing Putin all the favours Putin wants.Otherwise … Putin would probably phone Mueller and say chummily, "Want major evidence of electoral conspiracy, bank fraud and campaign funding transgression, fifty-three varieties?"

I work on a long, long corridor, so I wonder about someone just walking down it, shooting. where would I be able to dive for cover? Nowhere! all the doors are those old fashioned Sam Spade type office doors with big panes of glass. and there's a lab across the hall, all glass doors. Its amazing how much this crosses my mind when I'm wandering the halls at work.

Oh god. my poor parents (indigo blue Democrats in Massachusetts) listened to my 13 year old self explain why slavery wasn't so bad and a host of other cringeworthy things, with astonishing tolerance and good humor. My mother just rolled her eyes and said "Read "Andersonville"". My dad would laugh and laugh. I outgrew it, of course, but I still love Rhett. He was the voice of reason and witty enough to comment on Wonkette. Don't forget "all we have is cotton and arrogance" Hahahahaha

Trump's desire to destroy our democracy is blatant. We have a President who is a paidagent of the Russian government. He is a traitor; and traitors should be shot. This traitorhas been bought by Russian money to encourage the breakup of NATO and the governance of the EU by democratic systems. As astounding as is his treachery, is the Republican zest to revel inhis evil. They have become sycophants of evil. Trump must be treated with no respect, even if it entails acts that disrespect the office of the Presidency. Not serving his minions at restaurants is perfectly appropriate. Serving Trump is a criminal act. I'd like to see a fist fight on the floor of the congress. Schumer's measured tones, read from a script, a very thin gruel. It is time for fire. Trump's goal is to become an Oriental Autocrat, whose power derives from plutocracy on one hand and theignorant mob on the other.
