“Pro-life” people can go to Hell.

To paraphrase Jello Biafra: If they are alive, then God must be dead

It’s cute when people like Abby suggest ANY issue Trump takes on whatever whim he’s on that day will cause a single wingnut to “find another candidate to support.” Trump is obviously their candidate, and any winger who peels their bottom off the couch next year is pulling the lever for the blonde beezlebub. He’s a walking grievance. The human embodiment of Fox News. That’s why they can’t stop loving him SO HARD. His “position” on any issue is immaterial.

ahem . . . "Strawberry" blonde beezlebub . . .

The reason why Trump and others lie him do this sort of shit is because they can.

And they can because there are people who let them. And only because of that.

Holy shit I just did a bit of a dive into Abby Johnson, and...wow. That woman is certifiably a whackjob. Gets disciplined--and seemingly close to termination--and suddenly she has a change of heart? Oh, the files show nothing like the procedure you so colorfully described on the date you absolutely INSIST was THE date? "Planned Parenthood totally doctored those records!"

She comes off as an opportunistic grifter playing both sides. Once the right-wing gravy train finally gives up the ghost, she'll make a huge splash as a pro-choice double agent. (I mean, if the gift actually fully stops after almost 15 years...)

I was glad to read that a Texas-based news site took Johnson's claims with a huge nugget of salt, though.

A vile whore for sale to the highest bidder. That is all.

Robyn, (you bring out the total wack job in me)

I really thing you should own a large pair of testicle shears because you are a highly skilled writer who knows how to zero in on an issue. One of the main issues that hasn't been covered but probably should is that Trump has testicles but shouldn't, thus the shears. Snip, snip, baby and no anesthesia except let him have a baby seal club to bite down on. I believe with all my heart that he is the single most loathsome individual in human history, a notch above (or below) Rasputin, Torquemada and the guy who threw an empty bottle of booze at me as I was hitch hiking along highway 9 45 years ago.

He's going for the Me But Not For Thee vote.

If he wavers on abortion he risks alienating his base and they may not turn out but if he doubles down then independents are even less likely to vote for him so he's kinda fucked on this one.

Expand full comment

Not at all, he can simply adopt whatever position fits the group he’s speaking to at that moment. “Whatever you believe, I believe.” Watch them clap and cheer. It doesn’t have to make sense.

Don't misunderestimate his followers' continuous delusion state

Expand full comment

Granted that a segment of his base has a cult-like devotion however that's not 100%. Those who care about abortion more than him would be less motivated if they thought him a fence-sitter.

Ta, Robyn. I loathe and detest Trump, every single day.

Not even every single minute, moment, second, and nanosecond?

I don’t know why he thinks he has to sit back and rebrand anything. His base loves that he is saves who he is- a racist incompetent liar who wants to be a cheap dictator for life.

All he has to do is just keep stoking the persecution complex of his supporters, and not back and hope that our awful mainstream media does enough to take Biden down by selling, “what is Joe Biden’s fault today?” stories for clicks, and the rest of the goal is accomplished by anti-dem messaging on tik tok and republican-controlled states enforcing Jim Crow voter suppression laws.

It’s sad that Trump actually is more aware of the hot button issue that reproductive rights are than the rest of the GOP candidates. Also too, anyone that flops towards him will be greatly surprised that he’d actually keep this stance. By now everyone knows that he’s a liar and will not keep whatever position he uses to win the nomination or election.

And you can bet that he’s paid for at least a few abortions in his lifetime.

Not nearly enough of them. Eric and Joonyer escaped.

I'm a moderate on abortion. I want anyone who wants an abortion to be able to get one, and for no one who doesn't want an abortion to be forced to get one. That puts me exactly half way in between the anti-abortionists (e.g. Republicans) and the forced-abortionists (e.g. antinatalists and some Haredi Jews).

Incidentally, I am also a moderate on endocrine health care: I support the right of anyone who wants it to get it, and the right of anyone who doesn't want it to not get it. That puts me exactly half way between the Republicans who want to ban trans people from getting endocrine health care, and the exact same Republicans who want to force cis intersex babies to medically transition.

I'm also a moderate on all other forms of health care. And on marriage. And sex.

As a True Centrist, I am clearly entitled to own the New York Times.

I think you’re trying to find a halfway point that doesn’t actually exist.

Medical freedom is just that. Democrats are for full medical freedom. Almost everyone in support of gender affirming care is against taking that choice away from people by making it for them when they are intersex infants. Ditto abortion care. Nobody is forcing anyone to have an abortion and good for you if you can find some obscure group who holds no power or influence and says they want to force abortions against the will of the pregnant person, but even if you can find an obscure group of ten people, it doesn’t automatically make you a centrist on the issue.

Just say you’re pro-choice.

"If they don’t think they’re getting their nationwide ban either way, they may be inclined to stay home. They’re true believers and many are likely not invested enough in tax cuts for the rich to bother leaving the house that day."

You're overlooking the fact that Trump's idiot base might not be happy with his new abortion stance, but they are totally DTF with his immigrant concentration camps. They'll show up to vote. They ALWAYS show up to vote. It's our idiots who don't show up, because Biden isn't perfect.

Trump is basically doing the same thing that every GOP politician has done since Roe - soft pedal a position to appear "moderate" to the general public, but telling supporters the opposite and doing the worst thing possible if elected, hoping no one will notice.

We notice.

I know it's wishful—and epically depressing—to think tRump's "Howard Dean moment" (when he does something so heinous his own base nopes out) is still to come. And if it's an abortion-related f*ckup that does it, all the more poetic.

I've always hoped there would be a "Face in the Crowd" moment, when Trump would get caught on a hot mic, talking about how stupid the rubes, hicks, and hillbillies who vote for him are.

I've ALWAYS known he had zero respect for the dipshits who vote for him. Howard Stern said about Trump "he despises the types of people who vote for him." I just wish someone would catch that on audio. Of course his audio of grabbing women by their genitals didn't make his Evangelical idiots not vote for him.

Of course they didn't. Dirty sluts were just asking for it. Besides when you're famous, they just let you do it. 😡

I'm hoping for a meltdown on live tv along the line of William Jennings Bryant in one of my favorite movies, Inherit The Wind. One minute he's beloved, the next he's a blabbering fool for the world to see.

I’ve always hope that it would be a Dead Zone type of moment where here he uses a child as a human shield to prevent from being shot except this time it’s one of his supporters who feels like Trump has betrayed them on his abortion stance. I certainly don’t want a child shot of course just that scene where people finally realize who he is.

Expand full comment

That would also work!

Of course after that horrific march in Charlottesville, Trump remarked "there were fine people on both sides" and that was after they killed a woman, and they were on tape chanting "Jews will not replace us."

The only real way he'll turn the idiots against him is if he goes through with his plan to add 20% to the cost of everything to pay for his massive tax cuts, or if he cuts Social Security.
