Hitler never gets enough credit for being the guy who killed Hitler.

Like everything else, Trump is a cheap imitation Hitler, not the real one.

Which is still incredibly dangerous.

"Trump typed, with random capital letters on nouns like a common poor man’s Hitler..."

Dammit, NO. In German you capitalize EVERY noun (and one pronoun [not "I"] always and two pronouns when you are addressing someone in writing), not random nouns. In German, you would be UNcapitalizing random nouns. And any Deutsche/r would pitch a fit if they saw it.

Capitalizing nouns was the only feature of German that Mark Twain thought sensible.

"Trump typed, with random capital letters on nouns like a common poor man’s Hitler:"

I just realized that capital letters on nouns is proper German grammar. Did... did Trump learn to write from reading Hitler's writing?

Expand full comment

But in German, you capitalize every noun. If Trump were somehow glitsching in German, he would be randomly UNcapitalizing nouns.

Dear Evan, couldn't really find someplace else to post this, so apologies in advance.

"Palestinians in Michigan thinking about not voting."

Front page WaPo today.

Back in the day, I was asking how Bernie supporters would feel if they sat out the election, Trump won, and appointed Supreme Court justices.

Well it came to, pass, exactly as predicted.

Don't tell me Hillary "was a terrible candidate" take some responsibility for not voting, voting Jill Stein, writing in Bernie, etc.

To non-voters past and those thinking about non-voting in the present, tell me a time that's done some good. The Bernie supporters said they wanted to

"teach Americans a lesson." They sure as hell did and elected Trump.

Don't be like Trump, who throws a fit if he doesn't get his way. Vote for the candidate who's likely to do the most good on your particular issue.

Vote Harris, she'll care about your views whether you vote for her or not.

IF she's elected.

Try thinking about the better choice rather than grabbing your ball (or vote) and staying home.

"Vote Harris, she'll care about your views whether you vote for her or not."

Generally I have nothing against your post but this is not a valid argument: The non voters don't believe that Harris will care about their views, that's their entire point. And they're not wrong to believe she doesn't care, Harris has shown already that she values supporting Israel over preventing the Palestinian genocide. So if you think the Palestinian genocide overrides any other consideration, then there's no point in voting for Harris. At least with Trump you can hope he will accidentally stop supporting Israel, he is just that incompetent.

Again, I have nothing against your position, but seeing things from another's perspective is a useful skill to practice.

Asshole.

I could do without your revealing sarcasm. Did you think I wouldn't notice it?

They're disclaimers because I expected a high chance I would be misunderstood to be supporting them. Turns out I have to use even more defensive language. Tell me, what can I add to make clear that I agree with most of your post and I'm just responding to that one line?

"Tell me, what can I add to make clear that I agree with most of your post and I'm just responding to that one line?"

Tell me, overly sensitive women, what's your problem? More patronizing.

I don't care if you agree with my post. I do care that you insulted me personally, that's what I'm complaining about.

"Seeing things from another's perspective is a useful skill to practice"

is a bald faced insult. And patronizing too. I'm just responding to that one line. Yours.

Expand full comment

It would be an insult if you were doing it. But I saw you weren't. So I assumed ignorance instead of malice and educated you. Do you want me to assume malice instead? I refuse. I refuse to carry that much hate with me.

Try it.

"At least with Trump you can hope he will accidentally stop supporting Israel, he is just that incompetent."

No, you can't. His followers would never permit it. The people for whom Gaza is a crucial issue in the election are just thinking "the grass is greener." It is a fantastically stupid position.

Expand full comment

His followers can't control that unhinged and dementing loose cannon.

And for the third time a disclaimer, I don't agree with their position, but I understand it. The thing with understanding other people is that you have to pretend you don't think what you think if that thought is something they can not be expected to think. So sure, call their position stupid, but also understand that from their perspective it makes sense. That way you're one step closer to figuring out how they think differently from you, and you can use that insight to use arguments that could actually work unlike saying stuff like " she'll care about your views" which they obviously don't see that way.

Expand full comment

Did I say you agreed with their position? I'm responding to the insults you aimed at me personally.

Now you can say "Oh, you women are too sensitive."

Expand full comment

Not you specifically, but this is a public place and in my experience we have to be very very specific when saying anything that could be construed as supporting a contentious group because there is always someone who tries to intentionally misread what we say. So I tried to make it clear I don't necessarily agree with them. My aim was neutrality but I missed. Sorry about that.

I was not aware of your gender, nor do I consider it relevant. Why do you bring it up?

Three things are for certain: Death, Taxes, and turn on MSM tee vee and there is Gen John Kelley calling Drumpf a fascist, right into Michael Schmidt's recorder. No thanks. I'll watch something else.

Schmidt says Kelly won't say "Vote for Harris" because the military is "non-political."

Right-o.

Expand full comment

Somehow he can say "fascism is bad," though. I guess he imagines that is "not political."

BTW, listening to Kelly speak, his reputation as a "warrior-intellectual" is not especially enhanced. The man barely has any speaking ability at all.

Thanks. Either you are the only person who read my comment, or others did but didn't feel any need to respond. Maybe they are on the "I disagree with every position of Liz Cheney but she did one good thing so she is a hero."

I would say: ""I disagree with every position of Liz Cheney but she did THE one INDISPENSABLE thing so she is a hero." We are unfortunately at the point where "rock bottom" = ally. We went through this with Stalin in WWII already.

I think Kelly needs to do more, along the lines Cheney is taking. Get out and actively campaign. He won't though. He is still in thrall to the mystique of his military status. Lucky for me, we old SP4's have no compunctions at all.

On the one hand, this almost warrants another watch through of the whole of Der Untergang. A masterpiece of cinema. Surprisingly funny quips in there, despite the horrible nature of the subject.

"Hello. I am here to be executed."

"No, general. The Fuhrer has asked that you take control of the defense of Berlin."

"Oh..... I believe I would rather be executed."

Don't call him Hitler, Hitler was NOT a fascist, Hitler was a Nazi. However, DJT does fit the description of a fascist and for those Americans who don't know or who have forgotten their history lessons, the founder of the Fascist movement was the swaggering, fat, bumbling, clown named Mussolini also famously known as Il Duce. Trump is an Il Duce.

Expand full comment

My favorite confederate to hate is Braxton Bragg. Pre-war he got into an argument with his quartermaster, who kept rejecting his request for more supplies. In addition to being the commanding officer making the requests, he was also the quartermaster rejecting them. Bragg was arguing with himself. Bragg was an idiot and a lousy general. Fort Bragg should have been renamed Fort Longstreet, who was a good general and who supported his friend Ulysses Grant.

These are same people who accuse even the most conservative Democrat or centrist liberal of being a "godless," bloodthirsty Marxist who idolizes Stalin and Pol Pot because they think the rich ought to pay a little more in taxes or that maybe civilians shouldn't own military-style firearms. No one calls them out on that claim, yet the MSM wrings it's hands when a Democrat points out that a Republican politician who pals around with white supremacists or claims that America is a "Christian Nation" is acting a little fashy.
