Because, you know, the immense $1 trillion deficit is somehow not quite big enough.

Nah, his defense of Christmas move will be begging stores to say Merry Christmas, just so that he can brag about how he brought it back.

Communist countries have a long and infamous record of sacrificing their own people for party goals. Not that they have been successful, but they will do it.

And given that, they may take their chances and hope they're dealing with someone that isn't a fucking lunatic come January 1, 2021. In fact, keeping the tariffs on farmers and putting pressure on American businesses/consumers probably make it more likely he is voted out next year.

Maybe I missed something, but where the fuck does Trump get the authority to pay anyone $16B from his beneficent hand? Doesn't Congress have to--you know--appropriate that money? Or is that soooo pre-2017?

There are plenty of farmers in Ohio in desperate straits already due to the constant rain. Those with crop insurance (which are most) have very few days left to plant before the insurance companies use their leverage and tell them what they can plant. Even then they will get one shot, there will be no window for re-planting should another rain event wash out the crops they do happen to get in. A good portion of farmers in my area have decided not to plant at all this year. Savvy farmers have funds set aside in the event of such a year or in the event of drought but few, if any, can ride out this weather and the results of the tariffs. I see a lot of acreage for sale lately.

The mega-farms are getting a good chunk of the bailout. When the family farmers have to sell off it's the mega-farms that cash in. If you've ever passed a mega hog farm it's not a pleasant experience for the olfactory senses. Couple that with the manure unleashed in the water tables and you can see why farmers detest the mega-farms.

"those who have a financial interest in a farm, but may never set a foot on it, let alone drive a tractor"Does this apply to dairy farms? Specifically ones in California by any chance? Maybe even ones with a certain COW-ngressional interested party??

Worries over Midwestern farmers have certainly not carried over to worries about those in California. Among the farmers/growers/ranchers feeling the effects of the tariffs are those who grow tree fruit/nuts (huge--worth $billions in international trade, especially to China/Hong Kong), grapes (and wine), and numerous dairy related products.Since their districts include many of these crops/products--and these districts are among the country's most bountiful and prosperous for growers-- you might expect Kevin McCarthy and Devin Nunes to be leading the fight to protect their constituents. You'd be wrong, of course, since both have little fear of losing their seats in the next election and have been far more concerned with kissing Trump's ass at every opportunity. (Nunes' family dairy operation is, if you were unaware, now located in Iowa rather than Tulare County). And, they've convinced many of their flocks that Trump is indeed WINNING!So, assistance for struggling soybeaners? For God's sake, yes! For those who grow almonds, walnuts, pistachios, oranges, table grapes avocados, et. al.? Seriously? How about vinters who export to Asia? Of course, you jest!
