Update on my prowl for raised bed garden soil hunt. I went back to Home Depot, and counted the pallets they had of the good stuff. 2 ft.³ per bag, 44 bags to a pallet, and I counted 36 pallets. Their website specifies that there are 1440 bags of it left, with winter coming on. They also have something like 1800 bags of the cheap stuff, miracle grow, .75 ft.³. Then I cruised Lowe’s lot, and there were so many pallets of the miracle grow stuff that I literally could not count it all. It would appear to me that the town is awash in growing medium.
This tilts the game in my favor. The serious gardeners will be too busy, picking blueberries, harvesting their garden, getting ready for moose hunting, to be trifling with potting soil. My serious competition may come from commercial growers, or other lowdown, shady, suspicious characters who are also cruising the yards and counting the pallets. That’s what caltrops are made for.
When I first did the raised bed garden thing, I called a company called "John's Black Dirt" in the Twin Cities area and ordered 2 yards of good black dirt. And got a dozen or so bags of composted sheep manure to mix in with it. The dirt, even delivered for me and dumped on a tarp I'd bought for the purpose, was as cheap as...a thing that doesn't cost very much money.
Then I didn't have to horse around with the pallets and bags etc. very much, except for the sheepshit.
