People tear down statues because tearing down racism is much harder. It's a good step, that's all.

Emmett Till's monument keeps getting shot up by people who I'm sure support Trump, so...

Also, too, every two bit, wannabe despot proposes putting up monuments to pretend they actually love their country. They never do.

I had heard the shoe story also. And that they didn't have coffee. Good stories nonetheless.

Oh duh...I had a brain fart...but that does not include Harlan and his “unusual” collection.

The basic idea is not bad, although Trump's neo-fascist titling could be gotten rid of. But let's be honest about the people Swampy Don has proposed:

John Adams, Susan B. Anthony, Clara Barton,

I think we can all go with them. If anything, the all deserve some sort of memorials.

Daniel Boone,

A maybe? I'd probably put Lewis and Clark and Sacagawea there if we are honoring the spread into the frontier.

Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain

A very interesting man who was a strong abolitionist and volunteered and fought bravely on behalf of the Union and was critical to the victory at Gettysburg which basically sealed the Confederacy's fate. In other words, the exact opposite of Trump, so, sure, why not.

Henry Clay,

Sure, but why not other foundational non-founders? Daniel Webster? John Marshall?

Davy Crockett,See Daniel Boone.

Frederick Douglass,

Yes

Amelia Earhart,

I appreciate Amelia, but if we are going to celebrate women who pushed us forwards, there are far many who deserve recognition before Amelia. Plus she already has a great Joni Mitchell song about her.

Benjamin Franklin,

Not bad to honor, but he already on our currency and all over Philadelphia.

Billy Graham,

Really? I know there are many over 70 who think this is a good idea, but given how much the evangelicals have sold out their beliefs in the era of Trump, but Billy's out in the open racism, no.

Alexander Hamilton, Thomas Jefferson, Martin Luther King, Jr., Abraham Lincoln,

Hamilton, sure. THe other three are worthy, but already have memorials.

Douglas MacArthur,

Why MacArthur or Chester Nimitz? Dwight Eisenhower, George C. Marshall? Omar Bradley? We can go on.

Dolley Madison, James Madison,

Sure, why not.

Christa McAuliffe,

Wouldn't Sally Ride be more worthy? Again, nothing against McAuliffe, but if not for tragedy, would anyone remember her?

Audie Murphy,

Again, why not, but how many other medal of honor winners are there who deserve to be honored?

George S. Patton, Jr.,

See McArthur, above.

Ronald Reagan,

Sure, if you also put Obama and Clinton in there.

Jackie Robinson,

Again, no problem, but why not Satchel Page and others who had to play in the Negro leagues due to people like Trump? Or the other players in other sports?

Betsy Ross,

Really? As far as we know, everything about her is a myth? I can see why Trump likes her.

Antonin Scalia,

So many other justices deserve recognition long before we get to Scalia, who really was known more for biting dissents than doing anything positive. Drop Scalia and put Thurgood Marshall, Sandra Day O'Connor or Earl Warren there is you really want to honor people who made a difference.

Harriet Beecher Stowe, Harriet Tubman, Booker T. Washington,

Pretty sure all of these names were added by someone other than Trump, but, sure, why not.

George Washington,

Already has plenty of monuments.

and Orville and Wilbur Wright.

Again, interesting, but there are so many other inventors who could be honored. Heck, be controversial and go with Oppenheimer.

It's Trump. All of that would have required that he read or was curious.

Not mentioning the obvious where this is yet ANOTHER Trump "style over substance" move, he's actually pushing that "we need statues to learn history" bullshit all the way.

This either means that America really is full of stupid people who would believe him, or that's what he thinks, or both.

Orville and Wilbur have a state park in NC devoted to them, plus stuff back in their home state of Ohio, so I'd put them in the "already have monuments" category.
