I remember hearing about that. My dad used to get that kind of grief when walking through our neighborhood in suburban San Francisco/San Jose in the 70s/80s.

I live in a mostly white working-class neighborhood in a small Midwestern town, and there is an African American family with two teenage sons living a block away from me, and they have lived here for 6 years. The kids have to walk 3 short blocks to their home when they get off the school bus, and occasionally I get calls from neighbors about "suspicious black teens" casing the neighborhood. I tell the callers "They live here." The response is 5 seconds of silence, then they say "Are you sure?" I guess they all look alike?
