We have both here in Florida, they are not fatal, unless you are allergic to them. I was in my youth, and was stung by a Scorpion. I was out in the boonies swing on a rope-like vine. One fell off into my pants leg (pants are evil) and was understandably annoyed. The lady I was visiting made a poultice with the tobacco of a crushed cigarette and a small amount of water. It worked, I never suffered any ill effects.
We have had a house there for about 11 years. We always invite people down but not many take us up on that. Until this past year, we had non-stop guests and it is exhausting! Those margaritas don't just drink themselves! And watch out when talking about go-day escuing-ray. There are some Very Committed people that run an animal rescue shelter place and they are always roping in unsuspecting volunteers. But usually twice a month they get vets in for free spay and neuter clinics and do marathon weekends. Free to locals too, though they still don't usually bring their pets in.
This is good to know... you may have Canadians showing up one day demanding to know where the best taco stands are hidden. (We also have an addiction to rescuing chihuahuas so there is that to recommend a trip as well)

I am no expert on fringe groups, but I got the impression that the ones I ran into who believed that stuff were more likely to be among the Rand Paul Libertarians or some other confused clades who would otherwise have voted third party anyway, if not R.
I don't really think many who were what I consider progressive went for Trump, simply because he falls so far below the minimum we'd consider necessary for a President. I greatly admire my Rep, Pramila Jayapal, and others like her in the CPC - Lieu, De Fazio, Lee, Waters, Pocan, Ellison; in the Senate, Warren, Merkley, and Sanders are my heros, and my WA Senators are very good on most things.
I live in Mazatlan year-round. I've been here since 2005 and explore all over Mexico although I make frequent sojourns in California. There are 3 or 4 great taco places within walking distance.
