I remember lucking into front row tickets for a stop on the Dew Drop Inn tour because I happened to be in the record store at the right time (I am old). I invited the person I was dating - the first person I ever kissed (we were in high school) - and they didn't want to go.
My jaw just kept dropping lower as my spirits kept rising reading Taniel's list. No wonder the GOP were crapping their pants this morning. Not only did they not win anything, they lost things they believed were their God-given prizes.
I'm pleased to hear all of the good news. I wish My Less and Less Fair City hadn't voted for a new charter that potentially gets rid of public comment (the Law Department description kinda lied about what was in it) and hadn't decided that they wanted to keep a neoliberal majority on the City Council because housing prices aren't quite high enough yet to price out all the not-rich people.
Ta, Evan. I do not think I've ever heard Tori Amos. If I have, I didn't know who she is. I've never seen an episode of Will and Grace. I DID vote for Zohran Mamdani and am very, very pleased he won. I have (nonsexual) history with Cuomo, and hope he leaves the city soon and forever.
The angels are hungover and the city is still singing hallelujah through a megaphone. Democracy got drunk, danced on the table, and remembered her worth. The joy in this chaos is holy because it is shared. Blessed be the bartenders, the ballot counters, and the ones who stayed loud enough to wake the saints.
Well, last night we flipped the Town Council to Democratic control AND retained our majority on the Board of Education. The (ousted) Republicans are boiling mad. Eat out my rosy-red rectum, shitheads!
From today's The Guardian newsletter, by email only (some parts redacted by me, for brevity), worth the read:
On Monday and Tuesday, the White House was firing artillery shells loaded with Trumpian crazy talk at Zohran Mamdani and New York City ahead of the well-watched mayoral election. But as the dust settled Wednesday morning, Donald Trump has started to sound, ever so briefly, like a sane and conventional political figure reacting to bad news, especially in contrast to the “thoughts and prayers” of the Texas governor, Greg Abbott.
The turnaround in tone coincides with a moment of jubilation for Democrats.
[snip]
“To get to any of us, you will have to get through all of us,” Mamdani said. “So Donald Trump, since I know you’re watching, I have four words for you: Turn the volume up!”
[snip]🎉
Mamdani is, of course, not a communist, New York City’s “survival” is not at stake, and Trump doesn’t have the legal power to withhold funding appropriated by Congress. Nonetheless, threats by Trump and his cohort in this contest have run from efforts to cancel funding for NYC subway projects to denaturalizing or even arresting the Ugandan American mayor-elect.
[snip]
But Wednesday morning, observers measured a shift in tone as the president met with Republican senators over breakfast, continuing to blame the shutdown. “I thought we’d have a discussion after the press leaves about what last night represented, and what we should do about it,” he said. “And also about the shutdown, how that relates to last night. I think if you read the pollsters, the shutdown was a big factor, negative for the Republicans.”
Trump’s comments later Wednesday as leaked to the press suggest that the president believes the shutdown is a political loser for Republicans and intends to make the end of the filibuster a central pillar of his political argument. He reportedly told Republican senators that the shutdown has been “worse for us than for them” and that Republicans “are getting killed” and will become a “dead party” if they don’t eliminate the filibuster and the Democrats’ ability to block legislation.
The president has repeatedly raised the fear that Democrats will choose to eliminate the filibuster once they have a political majority in Congress and control of the White House, to then admit Washington DC and Puerto Rico as states, presumably adding four Democratic senators and marginalizing Republicans politically. So, Republicans should do it first, he said.
“If we don’t do it, they are far more likely to do well in the upcoming Elections, which would mean a PACKED Supreme Court, 2 more States and 4 more Democrat Senators (D.C. and Puerto Rico), and 8 more Electoral Votes,” Trump wrote. “Terminate the filibuster now, end the ridiculous shutdown immediately, and then, most importantly, pass every wonderful republican policy that we have dreamt of, for years, but never gotten. We will be the party that cannot be beaten - the smart party!!!”
With three exclamation points. Because subtlety and sober restraint are the watchwords of the moment.
TFG? He represents himself. He's the owner, client, and only customer that matters. Everyone else is an object to be used accordingly. Did you catch his flub the other day when he called the United States of America a "business" or "corporation" instead of "our country"? Yeah, to his mind its *his* business, *his* corporation, designed to constantly make *him* money and flatter *his* perpetually wounded, entitled ego. There's never been anything more to read into him than just that. WYSIWYG
I am kind of sad about that actually. I loved her on Will and Grace. I was shocked to read that she's become a Magat. She might not call herself that, but as things stand today, if you're not anti-Magat and all the vile things they stand for, then you're a Magat.
Top opinion in the NYT is by Douchebag. The headline is "Mamdani's Victory is less Significant than you Think." Considering that the rag you work for, asshole, did everything they could to prevent it, I'd say it is MORE significant than YOU think.
Tori is my favorite singer, too <3

That was the end of that relationship.
Front row tickets!
It was the best concert ever.

I get the feeling he's not about representing the people but rather just piling up "wins".

We were at a Gabriel Kahne performance last night and he announced the results from the stage. The audience cheered.
Dems flipped Onondaga County? That's an eye-popper.
We elected three Democrats to our town board last night, breaking a Republican majority for the first time I've lived here (about 32 years).
Somebody said that Winsome Earle-Sears went to the beauty shop and asked for the Frederick Douglass, and now I will never be able to stop laughing.
I'm cackling over here!
Is this.. what hope feels like??
364 days till mid-terms.
Came for the gloating, did not leave disappointed.
