Truly. Here's a nice and horrifying story for you. The New York Times reports that in our completely necessary Freedom War in Afghanistan, the United States military has told soldiers and Marines to please ignore the fact that American-trained Afghan military and police leaders are forcibly fucking children on our military bases. Pay no attention to the sounds you're hearing and don't tell anybody, no way Jose. We're a bit at a loss as to whether this is just one of those Gruesome Realities Of War that we really, really wished we never read about, but hey, the story exists, so let's be grossed out together. And before you go "U.S. MILITARY EVIL BASTARDS," we want to point out that we're finding out about this because regular service members are speaking up and maybe losing their jobs and their lives over it:

Anyone with even the slightest knowledge of that region's culture could have predicted all the horrible things that have happened, included this sort of thing, when Bush/Cheney decided to have their little party. Not only did they not "keep us safe", they sure as hell haven't made Afghanistan any safer, either.
We wanted the oil pipeline, and the CIA, ran the drug business, which they did in Viet Nam, as well. If you read "Charlie Wilson's War", which is brilliant in summing up what Pakistan, and Afghanistan are all about. The Afghan men, were known for capturing Russian soldiers, during their occupation, and amplifying their screams, as they were raped, and skinned alive. The Afghans created a road block, that looked like lumber, but on a closer look, it was a huge pile, of chopped up Russian soldiers. The US, also, shipped countless Kentucky mules, to help carry arms, through the difficult terrain. Afghan men, would have sex with the mules. The Afghan rule was, you can have sex with pretty much anything, as long as you are in the "dominant male position".
I read this today in the New York Times and it shook me to the freaking core. I had to watch about 30 cute cat videos on youtube in order to burn this right out of my brain. Seriously, this is beyond f**d up. I'm just speechless.
It sounds like it's past high frickin' time to let the Middle East collapse under its own fucked up weight. The only other answer of killing everyone & letting God sort it out hasn't worked very well either. Catch 22, that.
The Taliban stayed rich and powerful by controlling the opium crop. Why don't WE buy their opium crop for the opiate derivatives which we use extensively in prescription drugs in this country? It seems like that would be a win/win---they'd be a friendly trading partner, they'd have a substantial stable income, the Taliban would be financially wounded.
The Taliban was very anti drugs. They executed people that were caught trafficking or using heroine. Poppy production has been on raise since the invasion.
