A substantial number of deaf people use English as a second language. Captioned English is not fully accessible.

I personally enjoy watching sign.

See the interpreter that often works with Tim Walz. She is absolutely fantastic.

“I'm gonna say this just off the cuff before I introduce our guest. Can we please just go away with half the screen during these emergency briefings to the sign language interpreters? I have nothing against, obviously, people that cannot hear"

"I have nothing against, obviously, people that cannot hear"

"But the way you actually hear and communicate are REALLY annoying to me"

Charlie Kirk can fuck all the way off until he hits the ocean, and then fall the entire fuck into it.

Dunno if this has been mentioned already, but ASL, as its own language, also has its own syntax, which helps it convey the essence of what's being communicated without extraneous words. Whereas I might say, I've forgotten most of my college ASL, I might *sign*, Forget Sign Me 'whew'. Facial expressions are used similarly to emojis, to convey tone and nuance. It's NOT a word for word translation; in fact, our teacher would scold us for being 'English-y' if we tried.

Just another confirmation, as if we needed one, that these are horrible people.

I can’t remember the last time I even took notice of a signer for more than a few seconds if I happened to be watching a press conference. I guess Kirk is just easily distracted? Christ on a cracker, just visually tune it out, man.

Wow what a huge pleasure to see ❤️Justina❤️ sign that amazing show. She is a really special young lady, saw some clips about her after the amazing job she did at Rihanna's kickass halftime show.

What complete a-holes these dudes are to just totally miss the point about ASL and captions not being the same goddamn thing. God it's so embarrassing that these ignorant turds have any traction at all in our society. Jeez Louise, whoever is tuning them in and hanging on such dumbassery really has no excuse.

The caption blooper clip had me crying laughing! Hah! 😭😅

My upstairs neighbor, Mrs. McHardy, was deaf. When I was about 4, she taught me how to finger-spell. The 2-handed version not the one-handed currently in use. It occurred to me years later that, given my age and spelling ability, our conversations must have been either a daily puzzle to solve or a hilarious interlude in her day. But she never laughed at me even though she might have been choking with mirth at my attempts at communicating. Lovely lady and a nice memory. Thanks for that, Marcie.

CC would be enough for the deaf people that are at the news conference LIVE? You privileged douche nuggets think only of yourselves.......EVERYTHING revolves around you and your insecurities about your self worth and importance. Did somebody's Daddy not love him enough????

If it's not specifically for them, no one should have it, and they should never have to think about it. The conservative mentality in a nutshell.

Ta, Marcie. I learned the alphabet at age seven from a book about Helen Keller. I taught it to someone else and we could talk in class without disrupting anything. I learned some ASL as a teen; enough to 'eavesdrop' on conversations among the deaf. I once saw a couple at a truck stop having an argument. When she'd had enough of what he was saying, she stopped looking at him. That was really interesting. Nothing Charlie Kirk says is interesting.

“…the tyranny of the deaf getting like 40 percent of the screen…”

I've been thinking about this post today.

I was an 8-11 year old (fully abled white american) boy, and at certain times surrounded completely by other 8-11 year old (fully abled white american) boys - and I can see how this material about how annoying the sign language thing was might really have killed...

The fact that soooo much of so called conservative discourse is basically stuff that would play well with that 8-11 year old crowd is so ridiculous - ugh this fucking timeline...

And it's NOT like this is new, ugh - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GwSh0dAaqIA

Someone once asked why handicapped spaces didn't open for able bodied after dark. Someone had to tell them that they were disabled, not werewolves!

How about the people at these conferences who would like to understand how to save themselves. Is it too much to ask that you can put on your big boy pants and have compassion?

Fuck - these people are horrible. I would love for them to go one day in a silent world and then tell me how stupid ASL is.

I may be a bit older than most folks around here, let's get that out of the way. I remember being 4 or 5 years old and seeing the ASL interpreter on television. She appeared in a small oval near the bottom of the screen. She always wore a black turtleneck in front of a black background.
